July 2, 1925 - May 21, 2020
Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Dobbins passed away peacefully May 21, 2020 in Austell, GA. She was 94 years old. Elizabeth was born to Carl and Annie Mitchell in Marietta, GA on July 2, 1925. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1942 and began working as a bookkeeper at Kaplan’s Department store, garnering enough savings to purchase her first automobile, a new Ford, and a mink stole. She and the Ford attracted the attention of local war hero, Jack Dobbins. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in May,1946. After the war, Jack joined the USAF as an officer. Subsequent to that decision, she has lived in Marietta with two “stents” away, supporting her husband on assignments in Murfreesboro, TN and Robins AFB, GA. A well traveled Southern Lady, she has spent time visiting her family in North Dakota, Alaska, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Germany, and Massachusetts. Truly, looking after her family was her life. A lovely blend of Christian motherhood and Southern tradition, Elizabeth spent every minute looking after her family, and welcomed her children’s visiting friends as family members. She was a social lady, involved in her church, Marietta First United Methodist, numerous bridge clubs, garden clubs, and volunteer organizations. As an Air Force officers wife, she spent free time hosting the officer’s spouses clubs, and helping to support young military spouses. She was the supportive mom of the boy and girl scouts, teacher of baseball, a patient wife of a fishing husband, the best cook in the world, and most of all a Mom…the bedrock of the Dobbins family. The entire family is so grateful for the loving care and friendship that has been provided by both Hearthstone and the nursing unit at Presbyterian Village during her six years there. We will all miss Mom, and are so blessed for having her as Mom, Grandmother, MeMe, and Great-MeMe. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring, and strong Southern Lady…and an amazing example of the greatest generation. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Jack (Col) Dobbins, her brothers James “Nebo” and Ed Mitchell, and her daughter, Jackie Cobb. She is survived by her son, Col (Ret) Randy Dobbins and his wife, Beth. She was always proud and doted on her accomplished grandchildren, Amy Cobb, Andrew Cobb (Catherine), Lt Col Ashley Rolfe (Chris), Erin Connally (Harrison), and great-grandchildren, Jacqueline, Carolyn, and Jasper Cobb, and Ellie and Ryan Rolfe. She is also survived by loving nephews, nieces, and their families. Funeral services will be private. A Celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate in her name to the charity of your choosing.
