His last words, “I Love You” to his beloved granddaughter Sarah, constitutes how Hugh Miller (John H. Miller, Jr.) lived his life. He loved genuinely and fully. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Hugh, a resident of Kennesaw, Georgia, was 85 years old at his passing. He died Saturday, May 28, 2022, in Marietta, Georgia, of complications from pneumonia and repeated illness. Hugh began his life on Valentine’s Day, 1937. Born in Augusta, Georgia, to Ruby (Blackstone) Miller and “Red” Miller (John H. Miller, Sr.). He had one sibling, Patty Cannon. Hugh grew up in Marietta and in high school was known to sport the latest fashion and style of the times – ducktail hair, cuffed jeans, T-Shirt and high-top Converse shoes. It was rumored he might even have spent time racing up and down Highway 41 in his ’57 Chevy. One thing that was for sure, he knew how to dance and won several dance contests over the years. After high school Hugh (21) met his “Sunshine” - Dottie (Croop) Miller (17) while attending school at UGA. After a romantic courtship, they eloped in another city where they were married in secret! After years of hard work and dedication, they established roots in Kennesaw, Georgia, where they lived for over 50 years. Hugh’s life’s mission was to please Dottie - satisfying her every whim and he did so brilliantly. This ultimately led to a 63+ year marriage where they were blessed with 3 children: Teri Snyder (Bob), Bert Miller and Jimmy Miller (Indya), 4 grandchildren: Joshua Poteat, Sarah Tuschl (Bryant), Shelby Miller and Tate Miller, and 1 great-grandchild (Tuschl) due in September. Hugh worked for Scientific Atlanta as Printer/Superintendent for 28 years. He retired early and worked with Dottie managing their rental property. In retirement he pursued his life-long dream of travel. For many years, they traveled extensively across the US and portions of Canada and Alaska. Hugh’s family was a priority for him and Dottie. Vacations and holidays were filled with traditions, fun and laughter. He taught his children to love nature and the outdoors through numerous camping and vacation trips. He loved to fish the streams of North Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. He had an eye for beauty whether it be flowers, sunsets, or his own family – he captured these images as an avid photographer. He even took an astronomy class in his 80’s so he could learn how best to capture stars! Hugh loved to learn. He could always be found watching Educational Channels and filled his life full of information and facts which he loved to share. He was a great listener in return. You always felt supported and valued when in his presence. His friends would tell you he was funny, loved a good joke and was known for his infamous laugh. He will always be remembered by all as a faith-filled-man, genuine and kind; a man of character. He was the foundation of our family and will be deeply missed. His Memorial and Celebration of Life Service will be held at Mayes, Ward, Dobbins Funeral Home, Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, August 13, 2022, 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
