December 27, 1936 - January 26, 2021
Mary Ellen Miller Trippe, beloved daughter, wife, sister, mother, mother-in- law, grandmother, sister-in-law, and friend, passed away on January 26, 2021 at her home. Mary Ellen was born in Atlanta on December 27, 1936 to the late Ellen Thomas Miller and Jesse Fred Miller. She was a graduate of Sylvan High School, and later attended the University of Georgia School of Nursing and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Soon thereafter, the UGA Nursing program transferred to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Mary Ellen, along with ten other young women, were honored to be the first graduating class from the MCG School of Nursing in 1958 where they received their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. While obtaining her degree, she met the love of her life, Judson Raiford Trippe, Jr. and they married later that same year. They moved to Marietta in 1965 with their three small children, and Judson established his private medical practice in Pediatrics while Mary Ellen was busy running the household. They devoted their lives to their family, their church, and their community. Their marriage of 62 years was rooted in their deep faith in God, their devotion to one another, and a good sense of humor. Mary Ellen put God and family first in everything she did. She was a planner and made sure family time was a high priority. Her love of nature, arts and culture allowed her to plan wonderful family vacations out West, trips to the Georgia coast or mountains, museum visits, attend Broadway plays, or occasional baseball or hockey games that Judson loved best. Memories of her packing picnics for a day at the lake or a day fishing as a family are memories that will always be cherished. The importance of family was instilled in her children and grandchildren, and she was loved and adored so much. Mary Ellen loved her church, the First Baptist Church of Marietta. She and Judson both taught the Young Marrieds class, started a caregiver support group, and in their retirement years, organized and hosted monthly lunches for the widowed members of the church at local dining establishments. In the 1970’s, the City of Marietta asked the citizens to submit entries for naming a new city park, and Mary Ellen had the winning entry which led to the naming of Laurel Park. She enjoyed reading, gardening, creating beautiful flower arrangements, hosting parties, playing bridge, and she forged many life-long friendships in Marietta. She was active in Mountain Laurel Garden Club, the Marietta City Schools which her children attended, and other organizations. She was always giving back to the community that she loved. Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband, Judson Raiford Trippe, Jr.; daughter Miriam Trippe McEachern (Jim); sons Judson Raiford Trippe, III (Wendy) and Cary Miller Trippe (Mary). Grandchildren Judson McEachern, Grace M. Fant (Justin), Will Trippe, Charley Trippe, Mary Louise Wood (Hunter), and Nathan Boatright; Sister-in-Law Jane Miller; Nephews Alex Miller and Jesse Miller. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her brothers Jesse Fred Miller and Steve Miller. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to Comfort Keepers in Marietta, and to her loving caregivers Adeline Elonge, Vivilan Burkes, and many others. A private memorial service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to: First Baptist Church Marietta, 148 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060, www.mariettafbc.org.
