Verdie Palmer Sommerville

April 23, 1927 - January 31, 2022

Verdie Mae Palmer Sommerville, 94, of Marietta, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 31, at her home and in the care of her loving husband. She was born on April 23, 1927 in Cleveland, Georgia, to Walter and Nellie Palmer, the second of five children – older brother Vernon, younger sisters Louvern and Emma, and younger brother Harold. Surviving are her devoted husband of 67 years Earl Sommerville, her loving son Robert (Pam) McTyre of Florida and one sister Emma Knowles of Marietta. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Russell (Sherri) McTyre of Cumming and Matthew (Kathy) McTyre of Canton and four great-grandchildren – Jake McTyre, Lane McTyre, Kate McTyre, and Mallory McTyre. Verdie was a life-long resident of Marietta. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1944, lettering in basketball. She retired from Dobbins Air Force Base after a career of dedicated service. A member of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Marietta, Verdie served in various capacities as a faithful, lifelong member of the congregation. Her love for the Lord was apparent in the way she loved and cared for others. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, watching Braves baseball, and most of all, spending time with her family. They will be blessed with warm memories of Christmas Eve celebrations and countless family dinners. She leaves a strong legacy of faith, wisdom, and love to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed by those that loved her. The visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 4, 2022 at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor Byron Edens officiating. The burial will be at Kennesaw Memorial Park.
