May 19, 1925 - December 23, 2021
William Brooks Bryans Jr. passed away on December 23rd, 2021. He died peacefully in his sleep, after an incredible 96 years of life. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and veteran. Bill Bryans was born in Dublin, Georgia, on May 19, 1925, to Brooks and Ruth. When we talk about the greatest generation, we talk about his. He lived through the Great Depression, multiple wars, and 17 U.S. Presidents. At age 18, Bill enlisted in the Navy, and served his country in World War II. In August 1945, Bill was stationed on the USS Mount Vernon when he received a message and was in charge of decoding it for the rest of his shipmates: Japan had surrendered; the war was over. Once he was back on dry land, he wasted no time graduating from Clemson University and then marrying his sweetheart Trabue Daley, at a wedding in her childhood home in Dublin. The couple would soon move to Hartwell, Georgia with their three small children: Alexa, Trabue and Brooks. There, Bill and his family would find a community, a church, and a new place to call home. They don’t make men like Bill Bryans anymore. He was patient and kind. A man of faith, a hard worker, and a provider. He was short on words, but long on generosity. He held doors open for everyone — always the last one through. And if something was broken, Bill was going to figure out how to fix it. Many of Bill’s friends and family have already left this earth. Those who remain will surely remember him as a great man — stubborn but selfless, quiet but strong, and good-hearted but with a lively sense of humor. Bill Bryans, or Daddy Bill, is survived by his grandchildren Molly, Alexa, William, and Jessica; and his great-grandchildren Brooks, Bailey, David and Sarah. Most importantly, though, he is survived by his two daughters, Alexa North and Trabue Kordares. They were by his side through the final, toughest years of his life, and never stopped caring for him. They put his needs ahead of their own, and made sure that he could be around to not only watch his grandchildren grow into full-blown adults, but also to be a part of his great-grandchildrens’ lives. And boy did those kids love their Daddy Bill. We will all miss him dearly, but we know he’s in heaven now, with his wife and the son that he lost so many years ago. It eases our pain to know the three of them are together again. And if the pearly gates of heaven somehow have a squeaky hinge, you better believe Bill will find some tools and get to work, whistling to himself the whole time.
