Carol Lee Hynek

Carol Lee Hynek, 81, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023. A funeral mass will be held in her honor on Tuesday, May 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10 am. The family will receive visitors Monday, May 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral home on Church Street in Marietta. Carol was born in Camden, NJ to William S. Young and Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Young. Carol became an official southerner when she was 5 years old when her parents moved to Marietta, GA for her dad's job. Her dad was a professional wrestler known as Tom Mahoney. Her parents raised Carol and her brother, Bill until they were surprised by their third child, Michael's arrival. Big sister, Carol was 17 when her baby brother was born and she quickly started taking him everywhere she went. Carol loved the game of baseball which she came by honestly because her grandfather could have become an MLB umpire if it weren't for his bad knees (a common theme in her family). She's spent years watching a few generations in her family play baseball from pee-wee to the college level. She watched every Atlanta Braves game she possibly could even when the games didn't start until 10:30 on the west coast. Besides baseball, Carol loved Notre Dame football and the Green Bay Packers so when the baseball and football seasons overlapped, the remote control was getting a workout. Carol may have loved her sports but that never came close to the love she had for her children, Chris and Erin. There was never a mother who loved her children more or was more proud of them. She was a great mother who always put her children first. When Chris and his wife, Kelly, brought their first child, Connor, into the world, Carol became a Grammy. Any rules she had for her kids when they were little went right out the window. No rules for grandkids! Colton, Colin and Kendall rounded out the grandchildren once Chris and Kelly completed their family. Carol was a 1959 graduate of Marietta High School who was employed by Prudential Insurance Company for most of her work life. After leaving Prudential, she worked for the Cobb County Board of Elections for more than 15 years before finally getting a much deserved retirement. Carol was often the life of the party as she never met a stranger. She loved a good margaritas and affectionately became known as "mama" to everyone who met her at the Mexican restaurant. Carol is preceded in death by her parents, William S. Young (aka Tom Mahoney) and Sarah E. Young and her brother, Bill Young as well as his wife, Frances. In 2017, her youngest nephew, Brendan Young, passed away in a motorcycle accident. Her very dear friend from high school, Barbara Harrington, passed as well. Surviving member's of Carol's family include her son, Chris Hynek (Kelly) and their amazing children, sons Connor, Colton, Colin and daughter Kendall. She's also survived by her daughter, Erin Hynek, brother Mike Young and his wife, Diana and their son, and her nephew Ryan Young (Kimberly). Other surviving nieces and nephews include Stacy Burke (Ray), Billy Young, Danny Young (Erica) and Karen Walden (Todd). Her best friend since first grade, Sarah Jones, and countless other friends will keep her memory alive.
