Carol McNair Smith

Carol McNair Smith, beloved wife of Donald D. Smith, died at her home on May 29, 2015 from complications arising from Alzheimer’s disease. Carol was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia on May 11, 1934 to Hubert and Gladys McNair. She spent her early years in the Summerville, Georgia area, where her parents were itinerant school teachers, and then lived in Rome for several years before moving to Marietta in 1949. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1952 and trained as an X-ray technician at Kennestone Hospital soon after the hospital had moved to its current location. She and Don married on Thanksgiving Day in 1955 while Don was in his first semester at the University of Gerogia School of Law in Athens, GA. Following daughter Lauren’s birth and Don’s graduation they lived for several months in Norfolk, Virginia, where Don worked in the Law Department of Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company. They moved to Augusta, Georgia where Don was a partner in the firm of Congdon, Holley & Smith and son Dwight and daughter Leslie were born. They returned to Marietta in 1962. Don practiced with an Atlanta firm for several years and then they achieved their ultimate goal of practicing law and being a part of the Marietta community. Their family was complete when daughter Lynne was born in Marietta. Carol was an excellent homemaker and was the glue that held the family together. She raised the children almost single-handedly. She was the one who took care of the plumbing, electrical and other problems around the house, having married a mechanics-challenged husband. She cut her own hair, Don’s hair, the children’s hair and the hair of numerous friends of the children. Carol loved music of all types and sang in the First Methodist Church of Marietta choir for several years. She was in several bridge clubs for over 40 years. She loved traveling, especially with the Panama City group, which she annually enjoyed the hospitality of the Hildreth family in Panama City and Ft. Walton Beach Florida. She also enjoyed frequent visits to St. Simons Island, where she and Don co-owned a condominium with close friends. She loved God, her church, her family and her fellow man. Carol lived a good life until she was stricken with dementia serval years ago. The family is grateful to Mrs. Virginia Ward and Mrs. Barbara Ward for the loving care they gave to Carol during her declining years. Carol is survived by her husband of sixty years, Donald D. Smith, daughter Lauren Sinclair (John), son Donald Dwight Smith, Jr., daughter Leslie Hightower (Clay), daughter Lynne McLaughlin (John), brother William Herbert McNair (Wendy), of St. Simons Island, GA, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Marietta, with Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers donations made be made in Carol’s memory to the First United Methodist Church Good Samaritan Fund or to a charity of your choice.
