Charles L Fainn

Charles L. Fainn, 90, of Oakboro, NC, passed away at home on October 17, 2024 with his loving family by his side. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home Macland Chapel in Powder Springs, GA. Interment will follow the service at Sunrise Memorial Garden in Douglasville, Ga. Charles is preceded in death by his father Leo Fainn, mother, Leola Fainn of Powder Springs, GA. His younger brothers Tommy Fainn (9 years younger), and David Fainn, (14 years younger). Charles loved Jesus and was a true man of God and his character reflected what he believed. He was a deacon at Mars Hill Baptist Church for many years. He loved everyone and helped anyone he could just like Jesus. Charles was born and raised on a cotton farm in Alabama, he didn’t shy away from work and had more of a wealth of knowledge of worldly ways than any scholar. He was a man who knew what he wanted in life, a family and a career to support his dreams. He joined the Air Force as a load master on a C1-19. He drove the staff car for the commander of the far east services, 5 Star General Dwight D Eisenhower. He was awarded the Presidential Citation for driving Eisenhower in Korea negotiating peace deals with both North and South Korea. He sang at the Captains Club with a five-piece band while in service. Charles believed in love at first sight, especially after meeting Inoma. They met the first time on August 16, 1954 and married 3 and a half weeks later on September 12, 1954. Charles was a “trucker.” He retired from Bowman. He purchased his own rig, and drove until his retirement age, or what he thought was going to be his retirement age until Leggett & Platt sought him out months later and asked him to drive for them. He agreed with one exception, that Mama went with him. He took her to get her CDLs, and they hit the road again where they visited 48 states in the “Good Ole USA.” What he enjoyed most was his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His children were practically raised at the Grand Ole Opry. He loved traveling and taking his family to different places to enjoy. He loved family gatherings, and his favorite holiday was New Years. Mr. Fainn is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years Inoma Fainn; his daughters, Janet Daniel (Darrell), Charlynn Straatman (Jim); two sons, Curtis Fainn (Mary), Alan Fainn (Sherry); seven grandchildren, Shawn Fainn, Brandy Hill (Jeff), Brittany Hamlin (Trey), Erin Howland (Cory), Cameron Blair (Christina), Charlie Fox (Jessie), Matthew Straatman (Alyssa); and 10 great-grandchildren, Jeffrey (Breanna), Cassie, Piper, Carter, Amelia, Kirby, Riley, Reagan, Jameson, and new baby girl on the way. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
