Woodrow "Woody" Wilson Tibbetts

Woodrow Wilson Tibbetts, 100 years of age, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went to be with the Lord on January 19, 2018. Woody, has been a permanent resident of Marietta since 1942. He was the son of the late Maston Elihew Tibbitts and Frances Victoria Bowman Tibbitts. Woody and Thelma raised two children in Marietta: Alice Tibbetts Faber and Samuel Woodrow Tibbetts. Woody is survived by Alice & Sammy (Margaret), 5 grandchildren: Lisa Poole, Monica Witzigreuter (John), John Moore (Amy), Brent Tibbetts and Jessica Tibbetts, 5 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. Also, he is survived by his brother, Jack Tibbitts of Hiram, Georgia. Woody was born near Dallas, Georgia on September 4, 1917, and was raised with his 13 brothers and sisters in the Burnt Hickory Community of Paulding County. Woodrow married Thelma Holland in 1940. They lived in Rockmart where he worked at the Goodyear Tire Company until World War II began. In 1942, they moved to Marietta, where he worked at the Bell Aircraft Plant. Woody's main job at the Bell was to install the control panels in the cockpit of the B-29 bombers. After the war ended, Woody went to work at the Marietta Post Office, where he worked for 32 years. Woody was a devoted husband and father often working at two jobs. Woody and Thelma spent the post war years building a home in Marietta, raising Alice and Sammy plus being the ideal grandparents. After Thelma died in 1982, Woody and his cousin, Gene Tibbetts, worked for the Downtown Marietta Development for 12 years. They not only maintained the flowers around the square, but entertained tourists and residents. Woody, in his retirement, enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, and playing gospel music on the piano. Woody traveled to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, and all over the United States and Canada. Woody's love overflowed for his family and church friends at Marietta First Baptist, where he was a life deacon. One of his favorite quotes, during his 100th birthday celebration, was "I have gone from horse and buggy days to man on the moon days". Woody had a tremendous love for life and nature. His Strength, humor and positive outlook sustained all who knew him over his 100-year life span. He will be missed beyond measure by all who knew him. The celebration of life service will be held at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home on Church St. in Marietta, on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. Visitation will be held in the chapel from 12:30 P.M. to 2 P.M. prior to the services. Interment will be at Kennesaw Memorial Park directly following the service.
