Alan Gene DeJarnett

Alan Gene DeJarnett of Marietta, GA died Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the age of 87. Born in Massac County, IL, on March 13, 1931, he was the youngest of the seven children of David A. and Nellie Giltner DeJarnett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Raymond DeJarnett and Arnold DeJarnett, sisters Elva Irene DeJarnett and Mary Evelyn DeJarnett, and sisters-in-law Elizabeth (Arnold) DeJarnett, Betty (Omer) DeJarnett and niece Mary (Larry) DeJarnett. Gene was educated in the Massac County schools; attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, and was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years for the Philips Petroleum Company, as well as serving as a medical office manager and as facility manager for the Marietta First United Methodist Church. A lifelong United Methodist, Gene was always an active member of the choir and served for many years assisting in hosting and directing the many weddings held at the Marietta church – a job he loved and at which he excelled. He loved a good story and loved to hold court, telling tales, some of which may even have been loosely based on truth. He loved and pampered his many pet dogs over many years and was even known to tolerate an occasional cat. Gene loved to travel, and was always ready to help someone who needed assistance. He loved being with his family and treated his many nieces and nephews as if they were his own children. He formed deep friendships quickly, and loved the community that gathered for meals at the Golden Corral and, more recently, the many residents at Atherton Place. Alan Gene DeJarnett is survived by: brother Omer DeJarnett of Louisville, KY; brother and sister-in-law Lindell and Ann DeJarnett of Marietta, GA; sister-in-law Fern DeJarnett (Raymond) of Belleville, IL; nephew Larry DeJarnett, of Palm Desert, CA; nephew Donald DeJarnett of Belleville, IL; nephew Richard and wife Sherry DeJarnett of Shepherdstown, KY; niece René DeJarnett of Louisville, KY; niece Jan and husband Ron Rodgers of Daytona Beach, FL; niece Joyce DeJarnett of Ocala, FL; niece Joan and husband Tom Sutton of Tallahassee, FL; nephew Stanley and wife Kaye DeJarnett of Madison, GA; nephew Douglas and wife Susan Grove-DeJarnett of Johnson City, TN; nephew Jeffrey and wife Kibbie DeJarnett of Marietta, GA; nephew Christopher DeJarnett of Asheville, NC; and numerous great nieces/nephews and great-great nieces/nephew. He is also survived by his long-time dear and caring friend, Lonnie Love. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 17 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, Marietta, GA, with The Reverend Douglas Grove-DeJarnett and The Reverend Julie Boone officiating. The family will receive friends in the church reception hall following the service. Interment will follow at a later date at the Mt. Sterling Cemetery, Brookport, IL.
