Rev. Alpheus Constantine Townsend "Mankind"

Rev. Alpheus C. Townsend, 91, of Lithonia, GA passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at his home. A Funeral Service will be held in his honor on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Macland Chapel with Rev. Barry Lancaster officiating. Rev. Townsend will return to his home state of New York to be interred next to his family at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on Hudson, New York on Monday, December 12, 2022. Reverend Alpheus Townsend of the Unity Temple of Peace in the Bronx, New York. Reverend Townsend was born on January 6, 1931, in St. Catherine’s Jamaica where he was raised by his parents Mrs. Dalamina and Mr. Samuel Townsend. As a young man, Alpheus served as a fireman from 1955-1964. He met his wife Millicent Townsend at a church mission. The wedding was held at their home church Jones Town Gospel Hall on June 6, 1964. The couple, Alpheus, and Millicent Townsend, migrated to New York where they were blessed with a son William J. Townsend years later. They resided in the Northeast Bronx for 40 years and Powder Springs, GA for 14 years, living the American dream together. He worked in New York at Bankers Trust on Wall Street for 5 years as an operations specialist. Then at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan as an accountant. After graduating from Malcolm X College in 1979, he knew that ministry was his calling. Alpheus attended Unity Ministerial School in Missouri and was ordained in 1981. in 1982, he then founded the Unity Temple of Peace in the Bronx, New York, leading the parish until 2012. He was elected president of the Clergy Coalition of the 47th Precinct in the Northeast Bronx, which serves all five boroughs of New York City. The organization assisted many people, young and old. critical aspects of the organization, such as the bylaws and charter, were authored by Alpheus. in his tenure as minister, he provided college scholarships to high school students, collaborated with the council and the community, and worked with the police to enhance the quality of life in the community as well as establishing three daycare programs in the northeast Bronx. Reverend Townsend was a man of positive words and many funny stories, a wonderful pastor, a devoted husband, and a great father. He truly lived to do God's work. Reverend Townsend is survived by his son William Townsend, daughter-in law Belinda Pina-Townsend, granddaughter Jolie Townsend, nieces dr. Paula Rodgers, Angela Rodgers, Michelle Rodgers, and nephews Darrell Downer, Ansel White, and Ruel Rodgers.
