Alvan Winslow Barrett

Alvan Winslow Barrett, age 88, passed away on Monday July 20, 2015. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta at 12 Noon on Saturday, June 25th. The interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27th at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Mr. Barrett was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on October 27th, 1926. His parents, Ralph and Lena Barrett, raised their four sons, Richard, Ernest, Alvan, and Roger in the Boston area before relocating to Los Angeles in 1938. Mr. Barrett was a graduate of Manual Arts High School and the Northrop Aeronautical Institute in Southern California. He studied engineering at El Camino College. During WWII, he served in the United States Navy. In 1949, Mr. Barrett graduated from the Army Air Corps Flight School. He served in the Korean conflict, piloting the B-45 and C-46. He received the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. Mr. Barrett retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel. He was employed as a Co-pilot for Trans World Airlines based in New York. Mr. Barrett joined the Lockheed Corporation in 1955. He served as the Chief Flight Engineer at Lockheed working primarily with the C-130. He flew on the C130 E first flight that flew for 25 consecutive hours. From 1960 to 1980, Mr. Barrett made demonstration and delivery flights to over 30 countries. He flew with the C-130 crew to the Paris Air Show and to Moscow. With 27 years of service, Mr. Barrett retired from Lockheed in 1982. In retirement, he continued his love of flying by piloting gliders and teaching flight students. He was a member of the Soaring Society of America and earned the Gold badge fight status. He was a member of the Smyrna First United Church and the Pierce Matthews Class. Mr. Barrett was the proud husband of Margie Eileen Parker of Canton, Ohio. They were happily married for 53 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie, in 2008. Mr. Barrett is survived by his three children, Ted Barrett of Rome, Scott Barrett, and Barbara Barrett both of Acworth. He is the proud grandfather to Allison Smith of Acworth. He is also survived by his niece, Marjory Barrett and her daughter, Monica of Las Vegas, Nevada.
