Arthur Crowe

Arthur Lyons Crowe, Jr. 84, died on January 13, 2009. Crowe was a life-long resident of Cobb County. Service will be held 4:00 pm Sunday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta. Arthur Crowe, son of the late Arthur Lyons Crowe and Edith Hudgins Crowe, was born at Creatwood Farms in Smyrna, GA, on February 25, 1924. A veteran of WWII, Crowe served in the U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division. He participated in the Normandy invasion in June, 1944, on D-Day plus one, and the Battle of the Bulge, and served through the end of the war in Europe. Crowe was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association on November 1, 1958, after graduating from Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta (now Georgia State University’s Law School). He opened private law practice in Marietta in February, 1959. Crowe held the office of Marietta City Attorney from January, 1967 until January, 1970 in Red Atherton’s mayoral administration. He served on the Walker School Board of Directors from 1978 until 2000, and was Chairman from 1978-1980. Crowe served on the Board of Directors of the Southmark Corporation in Texas in the mid- to late- 1980s, and continued to practice law in Marietta before retiring from the Georgia Bar Association in 1999. Crowe served as primary fundraiser for the Smyrna 20th Century Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated in October 2002. Crowe is survived by his wife, Gloria Houston Brumby Crowe, of Marietta; Peggy Crowe of Asheville, NC; Laurie Crowe Middleton of Marietta; Curtis Crowe and Rhett Crowe of Athens, GA; Katherine Crowe of Walterboro, SC; nine grandchildren on great- grandchild; his sister, Edith (Tut) Ingram of Trego Mt.; and his devoted friend Shirley Brown. Crowe was an avid outdoorsman all his life; he was one of the first Eagle scouts in Cobb County, a private pilot, a Georgia Bulldog enthusiast, and an organic gardener long before it was fashionable. He was an accomplished fly fisherman, bird hunter, and recovering bird egg collector. His hobbies included woodworking, stamp collecting, travelling the world, writing letters to the editor of the Marietta Daily Journal, and skydiving; on his 84th birthday, he jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.
