Ben J. Veal

It is with heavy hearts, but fond and precious memories, that our family announces Benjamin Jackson Veal, 91, of Marietta passed away August 23, 2022. Born at home in Atlanta, Ga, on Sept. 21, 1930, he was the son of John W. Veal, Sr. and Mattie Fleming Veal, originally of Roopville, Ga. Ben attended Brown High School and Georgia State College. He joined the Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954 with a rank of Staff Sgt. AFSC. Ben then worked with his brother assisting him in building homes in Atlanta. Between 1956 and 1963 Ben worked for Sinclair Refining Co. in Macon and Phillips 66 Distributor in Atlanta. Ben began his successful career as an independent residential and commercial real estate developer and builder in 1963. He was well liked by his homebuyers and lived among them in his own subdivision development. He served as Chairman of the Tri- County Home Builders, Director of the National Home Builders Assoc., and member of the board of the Metro Atlanta Home Builders Assoc. Ben was a well-respected home builder for over 25 years and proud to never have had any claims filed against him nor foreclosures. Ben served his community well by involvements as President & Executive Officer of the Cascade- East Point Elks Lodge with approximately 1000 members, President of the East Point Republican Party, member of the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce, Optimist Club and East Point Christian Church. Hobbies included golf, fishing, boating, and traveling. Ben was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Bobbie Brown Veal; daughter, Deborah Susan Veal; brother, John W. Veal, Jr.; sister, Martha Veal Smith; and nephew, Rollie J. Smith. He is survived by 7 loving nieces and nephews: Warner (Ann) Veal; Marshall (Deborah) Veal; Susan (Sam) Guest; Janet (Rick) Wachsler; Mindy (Mark) Garrett; Amy (Steve) Knowles; Max Smith and several grand nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, an organization of which Ben was proud to be a benefactor. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 28, at 2:00 PM at Mayes Ward- Dobbins Funeral Home, 180 Church St, Marietta, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the Marietta Educational Garden Center, 505 Kennesaw Ave, Marietta. Private Interment at Westview Cemetery.
