Bessie "Betsy" Prosser

Bessie Mae Cain Prosser—usually “Betsy,” sometimes “Beck,” occasionally “Bess,” but indelibly “Nanü,” or “Nanoo” to her grandchildren—died today in her Marietta home. Her death follows an arduous battle with declining health, which she fought with the same strength, grace, dignity, humor, compassion, and wisdom that marked her life. She would have been 80 this November 30. The oldest child of Connie and Gertrude Cain, Betsy Cain was a native of Trinity, North Carolina and spent most of her childhood caring for her six siblings. She graduated from High Point High School in 1948. And on July 3 that year, she married her sweetheart, Jordan Prosser. In 1951, the couple moved to Marietta, Georgia where she worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, until the birth of her first daughter. In 1961, after Jordan joined the bar, Betsy joined the Cobb Bar Auxiliary. She remained an active member of that group for three decades, serving on many committees and eventually, as secretary. Five years later, Betsy joined her husband as legal secretary. She stayed a constant fixture in the practice for thirty years, first in the Cobb Federal Building, and then in their office Washington Avenue, off the Marietta Square. And other attorneys would come to the office just to visit her. Betsy retired in 1996 and travelled as much as she was able, but devoted most of her time to family. Betsy leaves her husband, Jordan Hodges Prosser; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jim Bullard and Leslie and Dana Meier; six grandchildren, Brandon Alexander Bullard, Jessika Nicole Meier, Jonathan Andrew Meier, Stephanie Victoria Bullard, Joshua Christian Meier, and Rebecca Elyse Bullard; and one great-grandchild, Aden Randall Roberts-Meier; five siblings, William Jordan Cain, Jimmy Sherrill Cain, Gayle Frederick Cain, Jerry Lee Cain, and Judith Cain Hester. They will miss her. Mrs. Prosser’s family will receive friends at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home at 180 Church Street NE, Marietta, Georgia 30060 on Friday, September 4 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Services will be at Mayes Ward-Dobbins on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Donald Lee officiating. She will be laid to rest at the Earle Church of God, which was cofounded by her husband’s family, in Earle, South Carolina on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
