Betty E. Lee

Betty E. Lee, 84, of Marietta and also Riverview, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home on August 26, 2011. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Maple Ave. Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Nugent and Rev. Thomas Lee officiating. Burial will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Cemetery. Ms. Lee was born August 13, 1927, in Marietta, Georgia, to Lydia Hardy Lee and Sherman Lee Sr., and lived in Marietta her entire life until 2007, when she moved to Florida to be with her family. She was the eldest of five children. One sister, JoAnn Dickerson, and one brother, Sherman Lee, Jr., predeceased her. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1944 and worked in the school guidance office in the early sixties. She married in 1946 and had two daughters. She was an active volunteer in her children’s schools. She was a life-long member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. She was married there; and her daughters were christened and married there as well. Betty was active in the WSCS, the United Methodist Women’s organization, her Sunday School class, and her Circle. Betty began working for The Cobb County Public Library System in 1964 and retired in October of 1994 after 30 years of service and forming many professional and personal friendships. Betty was a proud mother of two, grandmother to four, and great-grandmother to five. Known for her excellent pound cakes, Betty was a wonderful Southern cook. She also crocheted beautiful, intricate afghans and delighted in giving them to family, and friends. She made heirloom ceramics that are still enjoyed by the family and she enjoyed traveling, especially after retirement. Reading inspirationals and listening to hymns and spiritual music were favorite pastimes along with spending time with family and friends. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Mike Smith of Tampa, Florida, and daughter, Brenda White. Grandchildren include Allison and Dean Thomas, and Zach Smith and Jennifer Satterly all of Florida, Greg and Tina White of Patterson, Georgia, and Amy and Steve VanMeter . Great-grandchildren include Norah Smith and Piper Thomas of Florida, Grace White of Patterson, Georgia, and Will and Matthew VanMeter. Also surviving are a brother, Rev. Thomas Lee, of Marietta, a sister, Mary Waters, of Marietta, and six nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed. Family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church on Wednesday.
