Bill Borders

Billie Minor (Bill) Borders went home to be with the Lord on May 15th 2011. Bill and his family have resided in Marietta the past 55 years. Bill was a devoted husband of 64 years to Marguerite Acuff Borders. He was a loving father to their three children, Carolyn Borders Whelchel, North Augusta, S.C., Edgar Darden Borders, Marietta, Ga. and Glenn Minor Borders, Budapest, Hungary. Bill and Marguerite have seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren with two on the way. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Lucelia Borders Henderson of Rome, GA, and is survived by his younger sister; Ann Borders Cofer of Charleston, S.C. Bill was born August 14th 1918 in Thomson, GA, and grew up in Cedartown, GA, earning the Eagle Scout Rank in Troop 20. He attended Georgia Tech before joining the Army, where he served during both WW II and the Korean War, earning the rank of Captain. He then finished his engineering degree at Georgia Tech and worked for several companies before becoming the Assistant Public Works Officer at the Naval Air Station in Atlanta. He worked there for 30 years before retiring. He was a long-time active member of Marietta First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon as well as worked with the youth and college-aged student groups at the church and then with the Senior Adult Ministry for many years. Those who knew him celebrate the joys and accomplishments of his life and remember him as a wonderful Christian, a faithful friend, a man of character and integrity and a blessing to all. He sought to serve others and his quiet words of encouragement and godly wisdom remain as part of his legacy. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2 – 4pm and 6 – 8pm at Mayes Ward Funeral Home on Church St. in Marietta. The funeral service will be Thursday at 11am in the sanctuary of Marietta First Baptist Church at 148 Church Street.
