Bill Ector

Bill Ector died peacefully at home on July 9, 2008, of complications of a brain tumor. He was 56. He is survived by his children Ben and Hannah Ector of Marietta, his former wife Theresa Benfante, also of Marietta, his sisters Betsy Ector Goss of Atlanta and Sara Ector Vagliano of Stonington, CT, and his nephew Dan Via of New York. He was the son of the late Howard and Ellen Ector of Marietta. A lifelong resident of Marietta, Bill attended Marietta city schools and graduated in 1970 from Marietta High School, where he was a member of the football team. He attended Georgia Southern University. Bill held various positions throughout his life, with Beers Contruction Company as contruction supervisor for the building of the High Museum of Art, with Post Properties and other local businesses. Since 2003 he was the publisher and regular columnist for “Hittin” The Note”, a magazine dedicated to the musical and cultural legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. Bill’s love of music held a special place in his life and he shared this love and his talent with people all over the country. Bill contributed generously in time and energy to Marietta community causes, including The Marietta Touchdown Club, where he created the Lettermen’s Club, and the Marietta Schools Foundation. His friendships both local and country-wide were countless, and their value to him throughout his life and especially in his last days was immeasurable. His family is grateful to everyone who cared for him. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory can be made to Wellstar Community Hospice, 4040 Hospital West Drive, Austell, GA 30106, attention Sharon Smith, or to the Marietta Schools Foundation, P.O. Box 1265, Marietta, GA 30061. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, July 13 from 2 to 6 pm at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory at 180 Church Street in Marietta. Interment will be Private. A celebratory memorial service will be held for Bill on Saturday, July 19th at 3:00 p.m. in the Marietta Middle School Auditorium on Winn Street.
