Carolyn Kytle Lucas

One of Marietta’s long time residents, Carolyn Neta Kytle Lucas, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. She was born in Marietta April 3, 1923 to Alexander “Doc” Stephens Kytle of Cleveland, Ga. and Neta Foster Kytle of Tazewell, Ga. During World War II, she married and briefly lived in New York and central Georgia. In 1950, she and her husband and children moved to Marietta, into her childhood home where she lived until her death. She was her husband’s business partner for more than fifty years, beginning during his work for Jewel Tea Company as a home route salesman. After his retirement from Jewel, the couple established a coffee business which she operated until his death in 2005. Carolyn was a supurb cook who hosted family gatherings for more than half a century and a consciencous custodian of family memoribilia. She was an exceptional gardener who favored heritage plants and cottage style gardening, but also created meadow and woodland gardens. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marietta where, in younger years, she taught Vacation Bible School and worked in the nursery. She was a charter member of Samuel S. Lawrence, Eastern Star Chapter 500 in Marietta which recently joined Smyrna, Chapter 387. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, Cincinnattus Duggar Lucas, Jr. of Reynolds, Ga. and survived by two children, a son-in-law, one grandson and four great-granddaughters, one of whom is named for her. Her son is C.D. “Nat” Lucas, III of Marietta; her daughter and son-in-law are Nan and Victor Gibson of Adairsville; her grandson is Robert “Bob” Elrod, Jr. of Dallas, Ga; her great-granddaughters are: Melanie Elrod, Savannah Elrod, Lucy Elrod and Caroline Elrod. She leaves behind other family members as well as friends and neighbors, all of whom she loved deeply. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, April 5, at First United Methodist Church, Marietta, with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m at the church. Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home will be assisting.
