Cary John Carter March 5, 1947 - April 10, 2018 HIS LIFE: Cary John Carter, “Mr. C.,” passed peacefully from this life on April 10, 2018 after a gradual decline in his health. He was surrounded by his loving family during his last moments. Cary was born on March 5, 1948 to Mildred Montgomery and John Carter in Los Angeles, CA. He received his formal education with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) until graduating from Jefferson High School in January 1966. In high school he was an avid athlete excelling in football as a quarterback and running back at Jefferson HS. He loved telling us about one game and one play in particular in which he caught the football and reversed field and made it to the 2 yard line before being tackled. It brought the biggest smile to his face. After high school he continued to play several sports as a young adult through the Los Angeles Sports and Recreation leagues. His love for sports continued throughout his life. He had an uncanny ability of remembering the statistics of professional athletes across many sports. He was the “Google” of his time. Cary began working with the Los Angeles Unified School District until he was drafted into the Army in 1968. He was stationed in Germany for a while and proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1974. He then returned to Los Angeles and to his previous job at the LAUSD where he continued to work for several years. He began a new career in 1982 working for the United States Postal System and quickly promoted up to Computer Forwarding System Supervisor. He worked with the USPS until his retirement in 1999. HIS LEGACY: Cary was married to the love of his life, Janice Marie Carter, for more than 20 years. They moved from Rialto, CA to Powder Springs, GA in 2006. Here they built their dream home and shared the joy of retirement. Cary loved his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Janice, and his children: Celeste Headley, Michelle Carter, Tamara Minnitt, Tigre Shorter (Leonard), and Tyrone Patterson. His grandchildren: Andrew Carter, Anjanique Dade, Anijarae Dade, Antedre Dade, JazMen King-Wright (Keshanna), Joshua Page, LT Shorter, Lance Shorter, Amir Shorter, Ahmad Shorter, Deshawn Patterson, and Brandon Patterson. His great-grandchildren: Braylon Walker, Ayden Pickett, and Kollin Wright. Cary also leaves to cherish his memory his siblings: Anna Jean Hollis, Arnette Lowe (Mac), Garfield Hicks Jr., George Hicks, Benita Hicks, Yolanda Hicks, Gary Carter, LaVern Polk, and Donesha McKnight. He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister Jeanette Williams and his brother William Johnson. A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Macland Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 am until 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at The Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, on Friday May 4, 2018 at 1 pm.
