Clinton C. O'Brien Sr.

Clinton C. O'Brien, Sr., 100, of Marietta, died Thursday, November 29, 2018. Mr. O'Brien was born on Oct. 10, 1918 in Soperton, GA, the son of the late John & Bessie Jordan Moore O'Brien. He was a graduate of Metter High School and graduated from University of Georgia in 1949 receiving a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree. He served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945. He was honorably discharged and received a Bronze Star and an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal fir his service and was recently awarded a Quilt of Valor. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 29 in Marietta. He married Vivian Smith in 1945 and lived in Dublin, GA, where he was a pharmacist before moving to Thomaston, GA, in the 1950s where he was the owner of Upson Drug Co. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston and Founding Charter Member and Chairman of the Deacons of Trinity Baptist Church. In 1961 he moved to Griffin, GA, and worked with Neel's Pharmacy. He was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Griffin and Southside Baptist Church. He was an active member, Deacon and Sunday school teacher in these churches. In 1973 he moved to Marietta and worked with Dunaway Drugs until retirement. He was an active member at Piedmont, Noonday, and Sandy Plains Baptist Churches and was a Founding Member of Highlands Baptist Church. Mr. O'Brien served on the Board of Directors of Truett McConnell College and was the first layman ever chosen to serve as Moderator of the Noonday Baptist Association. He retired in 1980 and he and Vivian moved to Baltimore, MD, to serve as missionaries with the GA Home Mission Board at 7th Church in Baltimore. After Vivian's death in 1981, he married Louise Fountain Voutila O'Brien in 1984. He was welcomed lovingly by his stepchildren and the entire Fountain family and he loved them all. His relatives, friends, and church were very dear to him. He enjoyed his garden, farm animals, sports, hunting, fishing, reading, and walking at the mall with his mall-walker friends. He was a very humble, gracious, loving father and Christian man who loved and enjoyed his family very much. Mr. O'Brien is survived by one son, Clinton O'Brien, Jr. and wife, Kaye Carter O'Brien of Marietta; one daughter, Sandra O'Brien Maloy and husband, Mike Maloy of Marietta; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Voutila Powell and husband, Steve Powell of Atlanta; one stepson, Deryl Voutila and wife, Ruth Voutila of Alpharetta; one sister; Helen O'Brien Clark of Dublin; grandchildren; Kristina O'Brien Corder and husband, Chris; Kimberly O'Brien Terrell, and Fiancee Bryan Massey, and his son Tye. Clinton C. O'Brien, III and Chuck Maloy; step Grandchildren Jake Davis and his wife Kristen; Caitin Davis; Rob Voutila and wife Stacy; and Carl Volutila; great-grandchildren; Lillian Terrell, Adam Corder, Violet Massey; step great-grandchildren Ashleigh Corder, Logan Corder and Chloe Davis and many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, GA. Funeral service were Monday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church, 2825 Sandy Plains Rd. Marietta 30066 with Dr. Don Mason and Rev. Craig Williamson officiating. Burial was at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandy Plains Baptist Church or to Gideons International.
