Cressie Lee Clegg

Cressie Lee Smith Clegg, born December 4, 1919, and widow of Herbert W. Clegg, left her earthly home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, January 27, 2018. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30th at St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Marietta, GA. Interment will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta, GA. Cressie was the daughter of Tilford Doyle and Flora Addison Smith. She was one of nine children living on the family farm in Franklin County, Georgia, where she graduated from Eastanollee High School. She worked her way through Piedmont College where she received a teaching certificate in 1942, and married college beau, Herbert W. Clegg of Wadley, Alabama, later that year. They moved to various US Army bases in the Southeast, and in 1945 moved to Marietta, Georgia, where they established their home. Cressie helped her husband in his State Farm Insurance Office until he retired. She was an insurance agent with Middle Georgia Mutual Insurance Company insuring farm property, and later became a real estate agent. Her last career position was working part time in her nephew, Winn Crump's State Farm Insurance Office. She finally retired the year she turned eighty, but did not retire from her life of service to her Lord and her church, St. Stephen United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Bell Choir, taught both children and adult Sunday School classes, led a Girl Scout Troup, served in many positions within the church and United Methodist Women, and remained an avid student of the Bible all of her days. Cressie leaves four daughters, Joan (Charles A) Waits of Cartersville, Georgia, Cynthia Franklin, Sherry Clegg, and Martha Clegg all of Marietta, Georgia; two grand-children Charles M (Lillian) Waits and Alisia (Wayne) West of Cartersville, Georgia; Great-grandchildren Rachel Nicole Waits, Steven C. Waits, Hunter West, and Lacey West, and one Great-Great-grandson, Nathan Waits-Varljen. She is also survived by her two sisters, Dessie Taylor of Toccoa, Georgia and Molene McDuffie of Greenville, South Carolina; sister-n-law, Lora Clegg of Virginia. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews all of whom she loved. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. till 6:00 p.m. on Monday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Stephens United Methodist Church, 636 Roswell St NE, Marietta, GA. 30060, in her honor.
