C.W. "Bill" Maloney

Charles William (Bill) Maloney, 91, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on September 6th, 2013 peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Tranquility Hospice in Marietta. Bill lived in his Chicopee Drive home in Marietta for fifty years and was active until the end of his life, only giving up driving daily, maintaining his own yard, and swinging a golf club in the last year or two. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy. A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta. Charles William Maloney was born December 22nd, 1921 in Paola, Kansas. He was the third son of six children raised by Walter and Pebble Maloney of El Dorado, KS. Always proud of his Irish-American heritage starting with Patrick Henry Maloney, who immigrated to America from County Clare, Munster, Ireland on September 23rd, 1848. Bill loved to sing the Irish lullaby to his young children. His Kansas roots and close proximity to legendary aviation companies like Beechcraft, Boeing and Stearman influenced his choice of aviation cadet school in WWII and his thirty-six year career at Lockheed in Marietta, GA. Other early influences were St. John’s elementary school, El Dorado public high school, and his attendance and graduation from Washburn Municipal University in Topeka, KS. These experiences helped shape his dedication to his church and to public education. A short stint as a math teacher after college also gave him a lifelong respect for the teaching profession. Bill met his beloved and future wife Dorothy Ann Scanlon while they were both in elementary school. He was a few years older than Dorothy but their families knew each other. It was after the war and his return to Kansas that their paths crossed again. Their fated meeting on a putting green at the American Legion golf course in El Dorado resulted in many weekend train trips for Bill from Topeka, home of Washburn, to El Dorado until he proposed in 1948. The Scanlon and Maloney families were joined by marriage at St. John’s Church on August 29th, 1949. Together Bill and Dorothy had fifteen siblings. Bill entered the Army Air Corps (Forces) during WWII and subsequently served in the Pacific flying C47’s. The C47 was the military version of the Douglas Aircraft classic, the DC-3. Using the GI bill after leaving the service, he finished his undergraduate degree at Washburn and started Washburn law school. Marriage and the birth of the first of nine children interrupted law school and Bill started his career at Lockheed at Marietta, GA in 1952 where the young family of now four moved to their first home on Judy Circle in Smyrna. Although interrupted by opportunity, Bill continued his law studies and graduated from John Marshall Law in 1957 in Atlanta. USAF Captain Bill Maloney was proud of his and his family’s military service in WWII, proud of his father Walter Maloney’s military service in France during WWI, and later proud of his sons and grandsons service during and in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the US, and Europe. The Maloney family continued to grow, compelling Bill and Dorothy to move from Smyrna to Marietta and a series of residences from Church Street to Sugar Hill to finally buying a house large enough to raise nine children on Chicopee Drive, the family home for fifty years. The family of four in Smyrna became the family of eleven on Chicopee Drive as the children started to grow and transition from St. Joseph’s parochial school to the Marietta City School System. All nine children were to attend and graduate from Marietta High School, a feat that later school board member and chairman Bill Maloney took pride in at every graduation. A True Blue booster, he enjoyed Marietta High football every Friday home game for several decades from his aisle seat on row 17 at the fifty-yard line. Bill and his wife, Dorothy, were charter parishioners at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and sent many of their children to St. Joseph’s elementary school. They were active in the church and volunteered many hours in those early years. His civic service and dedication to his adopted home town of Marietta ranged from service on the Kennestone Hospital Board of Authority to the Marietta City Zoning board and finally to the Marietta School Board. He served as chairman at all three boards before retiring from business and public life in 1988. Check chronology and dates…. Bill spent virtually his entire working career at Lockheed in Marietta, GA. The facility formerly known as Bell Bomber during WWII dominated much of the growth in Marietta and Cobb County during the post war years. Like many of his peers who grew up in the depression years, Bill was more than grateful to give Lockheed his working life in return for prosperity and stability. He progressed in his career from supervisor to division manager, quality inspection for materiel, tooling, and offsite plants. He enjoyed the travel that his job occasionally entailed especially travel by air. Anyone who was acquainted with Bill Maloney knew that outside his family, his lifelong loves were airplanes and golf. He attended college on the GI Bill but his golf game was what his college friends remember most. In 1947 his four-man team won the Kansas State trophy for his hometown American Legion Post 81. That trophy, among many others, was displayed in his office and later at home. His love for the game continued his entire life and Sunday afternoon PGA on TV was a fixture at 402 Chicopee Drive except when family holidays or special occasions took precedence. Surviving family includes son Mark Maloney and wife Sharon; son Matthew Maloney and wife Karen; daughter Mary and husband Bob Chappell; son Phillip Maloney and wife Julia; daughter Betsy and husband Tommy Miller; daughter Tina; daughter Gina and husband Tom Davis; son Tom Maloney; daughter Nancy and husband Jack Mangiante. Grandchildren include: Steven Maloney and wife, Allie, Brian Maloney and wife, Dana, Jay Maloney, Jeremy Maloney and wife, Lena, Mary Maloney, Christopher Maloney, Casey Maloney, Melissa Baggett and husband, Ed, Joe Boswell, Ben Maloney, Hannah Maloney, Clare Maloney, Patrick O’Shea, Allie O’Shea, Scotty Hoffman and wife, Bekah, Carolyn Hoffman, Margaret Ann Hoffman, Matthew Matassa, Lauren Maloney, Sean Maloney, Katherine Mangiante, Michael Mangiante. Great grandchildren include: Sebastian and Manuel Maloney, Taylor Maloney, Cole and Dylan Baggett and Abel Hoffman. Bill is also survived by a large extended family of over 75 nieces and nephews, including his sister-in-law, Carol Ward of El Dorado, Kansas. Family will receive friends 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22nd at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
