Cynthia Marvin Coleman Scott

Cynthia Marvin Coleman Scott, 89, passed away on January 15, 2023 following a lengthy illness. Cynthia, born in Marietta in 1933, was the youngest child and fourth daughter of Marvin Herbert Coleman and Jessye Morris Coleman. She attended Marietta High School where she amassed many lasting friendships and fond memories. She amassed no honors as a musician, however, joining the Blue Devils Marching Band solely for the guaranteed free bus to away games—an early sign of her lifelong love of football and being at the center of any social event. She graduated in 1951 and attended college at Auburn University. At Auburn, she discovered the three principle loves of her life – Richard Scott, the Auburn Tigers, and teaching. She married Richard Scott in 1955 and then led the nomadic life of a military spouse, creating a brand new loving and supportive home for her family every few years for nearly tor nearly three decades. Throughout her travels, she maintained her professional identity as a truly gifted educator. While Cynthia ably filled the roles of daughter, wife, and mother, she was, at her core, a teacher. This was her foremost purpose both inside and outside of the classroom. She shared her wisdom, patience, and love of learning with first and second graders from Honolulu, Hawaii to Newport, Rhode Island, and her impact was both broad and deep. Upon officially retiring, she became a central figure in the lives of her grandchildren. Unable to stay away from the classroom for long, she became a frequent presence at Due West Elementary, serving as a reading tutor, substitute teacher and all-around positive presence in the lives of many local children. This includes children throughout her neighborhood who were likely equal parts grateful and frustrated at the level of precision and perfection she required in the cutting of speech bubbles for the science fair projects. In her later years, even as dementia took her further away each day, she would perk up and smile if she saw a child on television. Cynthia loved SEC football, The Varsity, her years as a sister of Chi Omega, murder movies, a medium rare steak, Frank Sinatra, chocolate, milkshakes, chocolate milkshakes, Labradors, Camp Nakanawa, and her native Marietta. Her irrational fear of merging while driving was as large as her love for Auburn and her family. Cynthia is survived by her children Leigh Scott Owens, and her husband Ronnie, and Richard Thomas Scott Jr., and his wife Blair; grandchildren Whitney Blair Afonso, and her husband Esteban, Katherine Leigh Scott, Richard Thomas Scott, III, Cynthia Julian Saxon Scott, Richard Lawrence Owens, and his wife Sydney, and Jessica Leigh Owens; greatgrandchildren Thomas Julian Afonso, Steven Blair Afonso, Cynthia Monroe Afonso, Connor Coleman Owens, and Marguerite Ruth Owens; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard Thomas Scott Sr.; sisters Frances Coleman Hall, Helen Coleman Starke, and Marjorie Coleman Jones, nephews Ronald Jones, Gregory Jones, and Stafford Starke, and niece Susan Hall Newman. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 20th at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. Barry Lancaster officiating. Cynthia will be interred next to her husband Richard Thomas Scott, Sr at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Marietta. Family will receive friends 10:00 till10:55 PM prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the College of Education at Auburn University in her memory. War Eagle!
