David Field

David B. "Bass" Field died peacefully Friday afternoon surrounded by family members. Born on Church Street in Marietta in 1910 and with only a few exceptions lived in Marietta his entire life. He always said, “Cobb County born, Cobb County bred and when I die I’ll be Cobb County dead.” Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church in Marietta with a reception following in the Gathering Place. After graduating in 1928 from Marietta high School, he went on to Georgia Tech and graduated in 1932. Given the economy of the day, he was unable to find work and finally took a job on a tramp steamer for a dollar a day as he worked his way around the world. After his world-wide adventure, he decided that Georgia was where he belonged. For a short period of time he worked for General Motors Acceptance Corporation and then spent a few years getting his feet wet in the furniture business in Durham, North Carolina. In September, 1939 he married Isabell Daniel of Eastman, Georgia and after a short time in Durham they returned to Marietta where together they opened Field Furniture Company on Church Street, one block north of the Marietta Square. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines. In 1965 a second store location was opened at Bells Ferry Road and Cobb Parkway. Many people may recall the big red rocking chair that sat high up on the pylon at the intersection. He was a life-long member and former Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Marietta. Mr. Field is survived by his wife, Isabell, and three surviving children: Dudley Field and Jim Field, both of Marietta; one daughter, Jane (Mary Jane Field) Cluetts of Colorado, 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two daughters-in-law, Jeri Field, Candy Field and one son-in-law, Ted Cluett. He was predeceased by one son, David Clark Field. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dudley Field Scholarship Fund through the Rotary Club of North Cobb. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory, Marietta, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.
