Deirdre Dougherty Grogan

Deirdre Dougherty Grogan, of Marietta, Georgia, died after an extended illness on June 2, 2015. She was born March 6, 1951 in Bristol, Tennessee, the daughter of James J. and Helyn Link Dougherty. She graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1969 and with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, in 1973, where she was named to the Laurel Honor Society and to Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, she served three years in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, South America. She returned to Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked as a bilingual social worker and earned a United Way Service award in the 1970’s for her professional and volunteer work within the Hispanic community. In the late 1980’s, Deirdre began a long career in various types of insurance, working for John Hancock, Greater Georgia Life and THOMCO/Markel Insurance companies. She is a current member of St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her father, James Joseph Dougherty and by her sister, Brennan Dougherty Hodges. She is survived by her husband, Mark Anthony Grogan; her daughter, Alyson G. Brooks; son-in-law, J. Kyle Brooks; her mother, Helyn L. Dougherty; her brothers, Patrick B. Dougherty and Shamas J. Dougherty; her sisters, Ronan D. King and Tara D. Murnane; brothers-in-law, Ken W. Hodges, Brian R. Murnane, Jerome J. Grogan, Kenneth W. Krabacher, and Robert C. Sponseller; sisters-in-law, Patricia W. Dougherty, Patricia G. Krabacher, Catherine G. Marchman, Bernadette G. Sponseller, and Margaret K. Grogan; her nieces and nephews, Bryce D. Hodges, William E. King III, Brennan M. Dougherty, Ryan P. Dougherty, Moseley K. Snyder, Grace P. Murnane, Steven J. Krabacher, Sharon K. Mirande, Michael S. Krabacher, Christine K. Weber, John P. Grogan, Janice G. Thompson, Susan G. Mamrick, Michael T. Marchman, Andrew B. Sponseller, Jeffrey A. Sponseller, Matt R. Sponseller; as well as 21 grand-nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. Mark Barbour officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A special thanks from Deirdre’s family to all those medical and care experts who made the final stages of her journey one of dignity and joy.
