Dianne Scott Matthews

Dianne Scott Matthews of Marietta, GA died peacefully in her home on June 13, 2023 at the age of 81. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 16th at Midway Presbyterian Church in Powder Springs, GA. The family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Otelia Scott and her grandson Levi Mayes Burton. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bob Matthews; her two children, Charles Matthews and Mary (Matt) Burton; seven grandchildren, Luke (Veronica) Burton, Michael (Anna) Matthews, Katherine (Josh) Stutler, Mary Grace (Peter) Bennett, Will (Mary-Katherine) Burton, Esther (Logan) Johnson, Lydia Burton, and one great-grandchild, McKinley Matthews. Dianne also leaves behind her sister, Susan (Doug) Stearns. Dianne was born on October 27, 1941 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. She grew up in rural West Cobb and was a lifetime attendee of Midway Presbyterian Church, playing the piano for services starting in her early teens. She graduated in 1959 from McEachern High School as a member of the 4-H Club and Editor of the Yearbook. She met her future husband there and they became High School sweethearts. She attended LaGrange College then transferred to Stetson University, during which time they were married. Dianne received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with an Emphasis in Piano. While Bob attended University of Georgia Law School, Dianne worked in Athens as the Editor for the Head of the Agriculture Department. Before moving back to Cobb County to raise their two children, they lived in Fort Stuart, GA while Bob was on active duty. Once settled in Marietta, Dianne became the volunteer Choir Director for her beloved church, Midway Presbyterian. She served for 30 years and then continued to sing in the choir until she was no longer physically able. Dianne’s priorities were her faith and her family. With an intentional and thoughtful spirit, she embraced the joy of being a supportive wife, encouraging mother, and nurturing grandmother. She hosted countless family get-togethers and taught art and piano to her grandchildren. In her young adult years she enjoyed tennis, photography and travel. Throughout her house, dozens of framed pictures and traditional scrapbooks declare her love for being outside, surrounded by her family engaged in adventure. In addition to these foundational memories, we will always remember her as being wicked good at Scrabble, champion of traditional hymns, lover of dogs, and collector of Nativity scenes from around the world. She had the ability to be simultaneously witty and playful, yet serious and focused. Saddened but not in despair, we are grateful for her legacy and rejoice in her homecoming.
