Doreen Jeanette Hipps

On Sunday, Feb. 5 in the dark hours of morning, Doreen Jeanette Hipps at 91 years of age left this earth to be with our Lord. The family matriarch – she was known by those who loved her as Mama, Nana, Nanny, Grand Nana, Aunt Denny or simply Denny. In the eyes of those people, she was the most amazing woman. She came to America from England as a newlywed to a young sailor from Marietta after surviving WWII. She left behind her family, friends, and British life to give those who she loved everything. She loved her three grandchildren and helped her two daughters with them as much as she could while they worked to provide for their families. A brilliant mind with vast vocabulary, she did daily crossword puzzles, read every book she could get her hands on, and edited the local daily newspaper. She was talented with her hands evident from the beautiful handknit sweaters, bedspreads and throws she crafted along with the needlepoint pieces that she created. One could not tell the back from the front on her cross-stitch creations as they were done with such precise perfection. She was the portrait of English beauty even in her final days with porcelain fair skin without a spot of damage caused by the southern sun. She was a great pen pal to those she cared about, and her penmanship was lovely as the conversations she jotted on the page. The past few years have been hard - dementia is as cruel as the degenerative eye disease that robbed her from being able to do the things she loved to do with her sight and hands. Her family is thankful that she never forgot who they were and that her core memories stayed intact. During her first two days in hospice care before she was peacefully sedated until her end, she knew her people, told them that she loved them and kissed their cheeks and hands gently. Her family is a bit lost without her, even though they are comforted by the peace of knowing she is in a better place with her memory and body restored. Thankful for God's mercies this week despite the void it has left behind, her family loves her and thanks her for everything she did for them. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her two sisters, her husband, Robert E. Hipps, and her granddaughter, Tracey Spell. She is survived by her daughters Teresa Hopkins (Mark) and Dian Spell; her grandchildren, Derek Spell and Amanda Seals (Paul), her great-grandchildren (Jordan Sterner, Trinity Seals), and her nieces and many cousins.
