Dr. Carolyn Ward

Dr. Carolyn Ward of Marietta, GA died Sunday, February 27 of pancreatic cancer in a Marietta health facility. She was born in Atlanta, GA November 3, 1934; graduated from Douglas County High School in 1952. She attended Shorter College, graduating with an AB degree in Biology cum laude in 1956. There she served in a number of student offices, including president of her class for the first three years and of the Student Body in her senior year. She graduated from the Medical Collage of Georgia in 1960; served as intern at Floyd Hospital 1960-61; then in an OB/GYN residency at the Medical College of Georgia from 1961-65. She began her OB/GYN practice in a partnership in Marietta, 1965-77, then solo practice 1977-90 and an office practice of GYN in 1990, retiring in 1993. Carolyn was a member of the First Baptist Church, Marietta; a staff member of Kennestone Hospital 1965 to 1994. She belonged to the Cobb County Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia, the AMA and the SMA. Carolyn belonged to numerous historical and genealogical organizations and spent much time collecting, researching and writing in her interest of local history and genealogy. She served as Trustee of Shorter Collage during years from 1986 through 2005. While a Trustee she was a member of the Executive Committee for five separate years; was Vice Chairman of the Board in 1995 and 1996, and then elected Chairman for 2001 and 2002. She was honored at Shorter with “Carolyn Ward Day” September 20, 1994 at which time she was admitted to the Hall of Honor. Again in 1997, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Alumni Association and in 2003 was named “Hero of 2003” by faculty and staff as Past President of the Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Board of Visitors, McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University, 2007-2009. Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mary Mckoy Ward and George Theodore Ward. She is survived by two sisters, Janette Ward Clarkson of Douglasville and Ann Ward Bibb Leigh and her husband, Richard, of Rome; two nephews, Wallace Bibb of Baytown Texas, and Frank Bibb of Rome, Georgia; a great nephew, Bo Bibb, and two great nieces, Elizabeth Bibb and Elysia Bibb. Family, friends and former patients are invited to visit family during a visitation period from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 03, 2011 at the Marietta First Baptist Church, 148 Church Street, Northeast and funeral services beginning at noon with Dr. Bill Ross and Dr. Larry McSwain officiating. A graveside service will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome, GA.
