Dr. Wilfred Henry Turnbull

Dr. Wilfred Henry Turnbull, 56 of Marietta died October 19, 2010. Memorial Service will be held 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Life University Upper Gym, 1269 Barclay Circle, Marietta, GA 30060 with Dr. Guy Riekeman, Dr. Michael Smith, Jaleh Dehpahlavan presiding, Following the memorial service the family will receive friends at Dr. Turnbull's residence. Dr. Turnbull was born on August 5, 1954 as son of a German mother, Elfriede Jungermann and Wilfred Turnbull of British origin. He grew up in a small town called Stanley, in County Durham, Great Britain. After first British education he graduated at The New College, Durham, achieving two associate degrees in hotel and catering management in 1972. In 1974 he left England to live in Germany with his mother and her German family and worked as a cook and patisserie. In 1976 he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. This was a major turning point in his life and career. He returned to the university and took up studies of Nutrition and Diabetics at the University of Bonn, acquiring a BSC. He returned to Great Britain in 1985 to degree M.Sc at Queen Elisabeth College of London, UK. He completed his PhD in Clinical Nutrition at King’s College, University of London in 1992 and worked there as a research professor. After years of clinical studies he moved on to Queen Mary’s College, Edinburgh as director of the Center for Nutrition and Food Research as Associate Professor. In 2000 he completed a one year visiting professorship at Georgia State University. In 2001 he began working as an Associate Professor at Life University and worked as Professor of Clinical Nutrition until his tragic death. Wilfred was devoted to his career and work and enjoyed educating young people, always encouraging and supporting. Throughout his life he was a loving son, brother and friend. Although moving around the world, always in close contact with his next of kin. If Wilfred was a friend it meant you had a friend for life. He catered legendary buffets, preparing mouthwatering dishes, being a skillful and sophisticated cook and host, always generously opening his home to family and friends for every significant event. He loved classical music and flowers and took pride in his house and garden. Wilfred’s sudden death means a great loss to his family and friends. His genteel, gentleman and loyal ways and his British humor and special charm will be sadly missed. He will always have a place in the hearts of those who loved and appreciated him.
