Dr. E. Peter Inglis

From Midwesterner to Mariettan, Dr. E. Peter Inglis died, Saturday, October 20 at Sunrise at Huntcliff Summit in Sandy Springs, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 25, at 2:00. Visitation will be held Wednesday 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta. During his professional years, Dr. Pete was known for his gentle and attentive care of patients. During his retirement years, Dr. Pete was driven by his avid interest in B-29 airplanes and rock gardens. It was his warm and good-natured smile for which he became known during the last years of his life. Born Ervine Peter Inglis, Jr. in Aurora, Nebraska, Pete was the second of five children of the Reverend Doctor Ervine Peter Inglis and Laura Olds Inglis. His youth was spent in Greely, Colorado and Webster Groves, Missouri. Pete was one of many in the Inglis’ family who earned his bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. It was while attending Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri, as a part of the Army Specialized Training Program, that he met Ruth Laird Scarr. Their marriage of 61 years began in the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Georgia. The “B-29s were flying low” as Pete loved to say on that hot June afternoon of 1945. Pete and his best man wore their short-sleeved PFC uniforms. Pete served as Captain, Medical Chief, Dispensary 3rd Bomb Group, Yokota Air Force Base, Japan. His service in Japan overlapped that of his father-in-law, Francis J. Scarr, who was on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur. This allowed both Ruth and her mother, Mildred Cronk Scarr, to live in Japan during Pete’s two years of service. Traveling separately, Ruth and Pete arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in time for the birth of son Stephen Peter in the fall of 1949. After serving a surgical residency at Maryland General Hospital, Pete and Ruth searched the country for a place for him to set-up practice. Pete and Ruth took an apartment in Pine Forest in Marietta, and he began solo General Practice of Medicine in 1950. Pete was one of the first doctors on the staff of Kennestone Hospital and opened the Marietta Medical Center on Church Street. Pete was a true practitioner of the arts and science of medicine, serving thousands of Cobb Countians. He was known and loved for his listening ability and capable, healing ways. He served as president of the Cobb County Medical Society, the Kennestone Hospital Staff, and Cobb County Tuberculosis Society. After 38 years of delivering babies, doing physicals for ball teams, and providing house calls, Pete sold his practice in 1988. After building a new home in Whitlock Heights, Pete and Ruth welcomed daughter Joye Ann in 1958. Daughter Jennifer Ruth arrived not long after in 1960. Between appointments and meetings with patients and at Kennestone, Pete built and raced a Thistle with the Atlanta Yacht Club on Allatoona Lake, played bridge and initiated the Cavalcade of Medicine, an exhibition about modern health and healthcare at the Larry Bell Park. In 1964, the family moved to Huntington Woods off of Bells Ferry Road where they stayed until 1981. These years were full of serving as Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, building a horse barn and a “complex”, tending swans, putting together Cobb County’s first dune buggy and mowing pastures. Moving back into Marietta in 1982, Pete and Ruth built a home in Vintage Court. Here he designed and built a rock garden to conserve water and beautify the landscape, was active in the rescuing and rebuilding, through the B-29 Superfortress Association, Inc., of what would become “Sweet Eloise”, a B-29 airplane on static display at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. As historian for this group, Pete wrote about the process in his book, Restored to Honor, Georgia’s B-29 “Sweet Eloise”. Pete was recognized in 2006 by Grinnell College for his work. Pete and Ruth moved to Demorest, GA in Habersham County twice before settling at Parc at Piedmont in East Cobb and finally at Huntcliff Summit in Sandy Springs. An avid periodical reader all of his life, Pete kept up on jokes with The Reader’s Digest, the world through Time Magazine and, unto his final days, Marietta through The Marietta Daily Journal. Through the years, Pete was a member of or involved in: Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Marietta Golden K Kiwanis Club, American Medical Association, Medical Association of Georgia, Men’s Garden Club, Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Marietta Country Club, Camp Juliette Low, Koinonia Farms, Lockheed Management Retirees Association, Habitat for Humanity, Management Systems, Lake Burton Civic Association, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marietta. Pete is survived by children and spouses Stephen P. Inglis and Shawn Foley of Grand Junction, CO, Joye I. Solomon and Renee Solomon of Atlanta and Jennifer R. Inglis and Mark Baker of Cleveland, GA; grandchildren: Katherine Laurel Inglis, Hannah Rose Pilkington Baker, Miriam Ellen Rose Baker, Foster Jordan Solomon, Lucinda Jane Foley, Ryan Rabel Foley, Blake Addison Solomon, McKenzie Bay Solomon; siblings: Alan O.
