Eliza Rose Roberts Bagby

Mrs. Bagby died in Smyrna, GA at the age of 96 on May 3, 2012. Mrs. Bagby, the daughter of Thomas Duncan and Lila Williams Rose, was born on August 24, 1915 in Fayetteville, NC. She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1932 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1937 with a B. S. Degree in Commerce. While at UNC, she was very involved in the Pi Beta Phi national sorority, belonged to the Alpha Kappa Gamma honorary society and elected May Queen in 1937. After graduation she took a job with IBM in Atlanta, GA where she met her future husband also an IBM employee, Durward Thomas Roberts. They were married in Shelby, NC on June 19, 1940. She lived in several states with her family, as Mr. Roberts was transferred by IBM, settling in Chapel Hill, NC in 1955. After Mr. Roberts died in 1979, she married George Lewis Bagby of Charlotte on July 2, 1984 in Linville, NC. She moved from Chapel Hill to Charlotte. Shortly before Mr. Bagby died in 1990, they moved to Southminster Retirement community in Charlotte, and then she moved to Delmar Gardens near Atlanta, GA in 2011. Mrs. Bagby was an active life time member of the Presbyterian Church, head of the women of the church and involved with the PTA when her children were young. She was a very gracious lady who enjoyed golf, travel, Pi Beta Phi sorority activities, bridge and entertaining. She was very philanthropic and had a number of favorite charities. Mrs. Bagby is survived by her sister Sara Rose Faison and husband Seth of New York, three children: son Durward T. Roberts, Jr. and his wife Martha of Greensboro, GA; her daughter Liza Leiter and her husband Franklin of Marietta, GA and her daughter Martha M. Roberts of Atlanta, GA. In addition, she has five married grandsons William T. & Chris Roberts, John T. & Karen Roberts, Michael T. & Angela Roberts, F. David & Michelle Leiter, Jr. and M. Jason & Lisa Leiter as well as fifteen great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to her favorite charity: Crossnore School, P.O. Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday May 12th at the 1st Presbyterian Church, Marietta, with Rev. Denise Beltzner officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service. A Graveside Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 15th at the University Cemetery in Chapel Hill, N.C. with Rev.
