Elyea D. Carswell, Jr.

Elyea DuPree Carswell, Jr., a fourth generation native of Atlanta, died April 29, 2010. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Miriam Elyea Carswell, and two children, Elyea DuPree “Eddie” Carswell, III (wife, Christine Berry Carswell) and Virginia Carswell Nicholson (husband, Justin Marshall “Marc” Nicholson). He also is survived by four grandchildren, David Berry Carswell, Richard Elyea Carswell, Miriam Sarah Nicholson, and Rebecca Elizabeth Carswell. Elyea was born July 18, 1927 and was the son of Harriet Small and Elyea DuPree Carswell, Sr. He attended Spring Street Elementary School, North Fulton High School, and graduated from the University School for Boys. He was a graduate of Georgia State University, the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, and the National Trust School of the Trust Division of the American Bankers Association at Northwestern University. Elyea served in the Navy in Small Landing Craft Unit 30 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was attached to the Marine Corps and ran the landing craft that carried the troops to the beach. He was a member of The American Legion where he served as Commander of Post 134 in 1972. Elyea was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, Sons of the Revolution, and served as Deputy Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars, Atlanta Chapter. He also was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club and First United Methodist Church of Marietta. Elyea retired from Citizens and Southern National Bank and moved to Marietta in 1976 to head up the Trust Department of First National Bank of Cobb County. He had many hobbies including orchids, saltwater and koi fish, and gardening. Elyea especially enjoyed spending time at Lake Allatoona. The family is very grateful for caregiver, Garland Williams, who looked after Elyea with love, compassion, and respect. Also, the family thanks his Wellstar Hospice nurse, Debbie Grant and Aide, Vickie Frazier and his Visiting Angels Caregivers. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Marietta on Monday, May 3, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 56 Whitlock Ave, Marietta, GA 30064.
