Estelle Ferguson

Estelle Ferguson, 97, of Powder Springs, died Friday, July 21, 2017. Service will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 25th at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Macland Chapel in Powder Springs with her sons, Greg Ferguson officiating and music by Ken Ferguson. Interment will be in Powder Springs Memorial Gardens. Survived by two sons, Greg Ferguson (Donna) of Smyrna, Ken Ferguson of Powder Springs; two sisters, Catherine Lester of Cedar Bluff, AL, Judith Payne of Acworth; one brother, Lamar Walraven of Yorkville, GA; three grandchildren, Dr. Nicole Ferguson, Casey Blighton (Kelly), Christopher Ferguson. Estelle Ferguson was born in Paulding County, Ga., on June 17, 1920, the oldest of 10 children. She would quickly tell you that she was a twin. She and Genelle were inseparable, very much alike yet very different. They pulled pranks when they were growing up and almost always got in trouble for them. As adults, they would show up at events wearing the same outfits, even though they hadn't talked on the phone. Genelle passed away in 1995. Estelle was married to Hugh Ferguson from 1939 until his death in 1993. She was a big part of the Ferguson Nursery, in Powder Springs, growing and selling plants. She was known for loading up a wheelbarrow with flowers and plants and drawing customers by parking it out at the street. She was known for sweeping her driveway, and she enjoyed it when friends would drive by and blow their horn or when they would stop by and visit. If you Google her address, "street view" actually shows her out in her driveway with her broom. She loved people. She loved to be the center of attention, and a crowd would always gather around when she started telling stories. People remember her as a loving person, fun to be around. During retirement, Hugh and Estelle Ferguson were able to travel overseas, and they brought back souvenirs, photos, and fascinating stories from Europe and the Holy Land. They went on several cruises. After one cruise, they came back telling opposite stories. One loved the cruise; the other said there was a hurricane and the cruise was terrible. We asked them if they went on the same boat. Their stories were always interesting. Estelle was proud of her sons, Greg and Ken, and if you were with her for one minute, she would tell you about them. She was quick to show you their pictures and their record albums. Greg and Ken have sung southern gospel music since the 1960s. Although she did not sing, she was an encourager and catalyst for their ministry. She bought a piano for Greg when he was 5 and told everybody, "Greg's going to play the piano." Greg did -- there was no stopping her when she got something on her radar. Greg then taught Ken piano. Greg and Ken have taught piano to hundreds of students and have played piano and organ and led orchestra in various churches. Estelle lived in the same home for 63 years. She was able to live on her own for 96 years, until it became necessary for her to move to assisted living. She died peacefully in her sleep on Friday afternoon, July 21, 2017. By her testimony, we know she was a Christian, and we know, without any doubt, that she is in heaven today.
