Evelyn Harrison Dinkins

Evelyn Harrison Dinkins, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on June 29, 2013, in Naples, FL, where she had lived for the past six years. A native Atlantan, Evelyn was born in Kirkwood at the home of her parents on August 8, 1920. She was the daughter of Julian Mark Harrison and India Perkins Harrison. When she was a young child, her family moved to the Buckhead area of Atlanta. Her family was original members of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church as her father was a founding member. Evelyn attended boarding school at The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA before returning to Atlanta and graduating from high school at Washington Seminary. She then attended Pine Manor College in Wellesley, MA. In April 1942, Evelyn married Patrick Candler Dinkins, Jr., to whom she was married for nearly 57 years before his death in 1998. Evelyn enjoyed her life in Atlanta and was active in the Junior League of Atlanta and the Cherokee Garden Club. She was a long-time member of Northside United Methodist Church and a life member of the Piedmont Driving Club. She enjoyed bridge and sewing and cherished spending time with her family and friends. Evelyn was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and a very sharp wit, both of which she mastered until her passing. She was preceded in death by her brother Julian Mark Harrison, Jr. and her sister Mary Helen Harrison Howard. She is survived by: her three children and their spouses India Dinkins Field and her husband James of Naples, FL; Patrick Candler Dinkins III and his wife Emily of Eatonton; and Evelyn Harrison Dinkins II and her husband William Proctor of Powder Springs; and her sister Anne Harrison Webber of Nashville, TN. Evelyn is also survived by five grandchildren: Katherine Bows Taylor and her husband Henry of Atlanta; David Johnson Bows, Jr. and his wife Mary of Marblehead, MA; Ivey Virginia Bows of Albuquerque, NM and her husband Jonas Jensen; Dwight Devereaux Dinkins of Eatonton; and Laine Candler Hester of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by one great-grandson Ivan David Jensen of Albuquerque and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Evelyn’s memory can be made to Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Dr, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305. A graveside service officiated by Reverend Dr. G. Gil Watson will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013, at Westview Cemetery.
