Evelyn Annelle Stevenson Johnson

Evelyn Annelle Stevenson Johnson, 93, of Roswell, GA and wife of the late George William Johnson entered into her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. A graveside service for immediate family members will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020. Due to the current risk of exposure to the CORVID-19 virus, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Evelyn was born on August 24, 1926, the first of two children to the late Catherine Tarrance Stevenson Horton and William Louis Stevenson in the Center Hill community of Atlanta, GA. She was raised in Center Hill and West End areas of Atlanta, GA. She became a Christian at Gordon Street Baptist Church where she met her husband, George. Evelyn graduated from Girls’ High School in Atlanta, GA and excelled in many things. George and Evelyn were married from 1944-2010, until the passing of George. Evelyn is survived by her three sons, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her sister, Jeannette. Evelyn’s life was guided by her strong Christian faith as a believer in Jesus Christ. She was a member of Marietta First Baptist Church where she was active in the Parlor Sunday School Class and Women’s Missionary Union until George died. Prior to Evelyn and George moving to Roswell, they were long-time residents of Smyrna, GA, where they were members of Smyrna First Baptist Church and charter members of Kings Spring Baptist Church. Evelyn was an active leader in the Children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible Schools for many years. She was also President of the Women’s Missionary Union and an advocate for the church to be involved in local and international missions. Evelyn was very good at mathematics which helped her professional career at Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, GA and the Internal Revenue Service in Chamblee, GA. She was active in giving herself to the community, including ten years as a volunteer in the Wellstar Kennestone Hospital Oncology Unit. Her time there helped her fulfill her lifelong dream to be a nurse who could care for the needs of others. As a result of her being a breast cancer survivor, she was able to encourage many women who were undergoing similar treatments. She served the elderly and homebound for many years through the Meals on Wheels ministry. Evelyn was a second mother, grandmother and mentor to many people outside her immediate family. She was outspoken, quick-witted, and insightful, with a sharp memory that made her an entertaining story-teller and family historian. She was generous with her time and talents of sewing. There are many hundreds of her sturdy cloth tote bags in use by men, women, and children in schools and churches around the world. Visitors to her home always enjoyed sweet iced tea and ‘pim cheez’. She enjoyed sharing a gift of her crafts, a piece of chocolate candy, or some other act of kindness. She loved traditional Christian hymns and encouraged her family to sing with her when they were together. She was always energized by being with others, but the one person she most wanted to meet in person was Jesus, her Lord and Savior. On March 17, 2020 at 11:30am she finally got her wish. Evelyn’s favorite Bible verse was “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32 KJV). Evelyn’s request before her passing was that all of her family and friends would “give an act of kindness to someone”. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Evelyn S.
