Gabor "Gabe" Mezei

Gabor “Gabe” Mezei, age 87, of Marietta, lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully in his sleep under home hospice care on December 13, 2022. Born in 1935 in Budapest, Hungary, he became a high school teacher before emigrating to the U.S. in 1956 when the Russian Army invaded Hungary. He obtained his B.S degree from Hunter College in New York City and his MBA from Columbia University. Work included financial jobs at Bostrum Industries, ITT, Phelps Dodge and Columbian Chemicals where he retired as the Chief Financial Officer. He was instrumental in negotiating a deal to have a new plant built in Hungary for Columbian Chemicals and used his connections and language skills to assist in this endeavor. Gabe still volunteered his time at Score Atlanta for an additional 16 years after retirement. He was an incredible husband, father, father in law and grandfather. Gabe loved watching his grandson’s baseball, soccer and football games and was their biggest cheerleader in everything they pursued. He was a wonderful friend, mentor and boss. Many friends and colleagues have reached out to let us know how much they enjoyed working with him and respected his integrity, as well as his work ethic. He loved to travel and inspired us to explore new places at every opportunity, even offering to babysit when the kids were young so we could travel. We are so thankful for this gift. He stayed active working out at the YMCA, having lunch with friends, where he always enjoyed his desserts and volunteering his time. He was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed by his family and those who loved him. Gabe was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Moran) Mezei. After Peggy passed, Gabe reconnected with an old friend from Hungary, Juli Szucs who was a wonderful companion to him. She was an incredible care giver to him and we are grateful for her loving care of Gabe in his final days. He is survived by his two son’s Peter, Robert and daughter in law Martha, and grandson’s Jake & Andrew. A private family gravesite service will be held at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
