George Victor Matthews

George Victor Matthews, age 90, of Marietta, passed away on September 15, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Gerassimos Kassianos. George is survived by his daughter, Karen Matthews (Mark) Adcock of Australia; his grandchildren, Kelsey and Connor; and his great-granddaughter, Ada Sue; his daughter, Rene Usher of Australia; his grandchildren, Will and Katie; his daughter, Michelle Matthews (Justin) Vogel; and his grandson, Leo; his son, Gerassimos (Heather) Kassianos; and his grandson, George Kassianos; his daughter, Alexandra Matthews and her partner, Anastasios Touventzidis. Born and raised Down Under, George lived between the bustling city of Sydney, Australia, with his cousins and family, and the small country town of Mullumbimby with his parents, located in the northeastern part of Australia. Not far from the beautiful beaches of Byron Bay, where he was a lifeguard in his youth. He lived a life marked by service, kindness, integrity, humor, and a deep devotion to his family and the Greek Orthodox community. In 2016, the title of Archon was bestowed upon him in New York City, an honor he took great pride in. After graduating from high school in Mullumbimby, George went on to be an actor in Sydney for 7 years before returning to the family farm to help his Father grow bananas. He later bought a one-way ticket from Sydney to London with just $17 left in his pocket, not knowing what the future would hold – and that became the start of a successful career in finance that carried him well into his late 80s. Before establishing and owning his own finance company, he built international offices in Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Brazil, and London for publishing companies. Having grown up by the sea, George loved the ocean. He loved scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef and the Galápagos Islands. He also discovered a great love of horses. In the 80s, he began and operated a quarter horse farm that at one time had 475 head of quarter horses. Other passions George had in this lifetime included all things Greek, rugby, acting, tennis, Spanish guitar, quarter horses, scuba diving, underwater photography, backgammon, watching movies, reading murder-mystery-crime novels, travelling, storytelling (wow - was he a great storyteller), fundraising for the church, meeting with the ROMEOs at the Kafenion, bragging about his kids and grandkids, and weightlifting. He began weightlifting at 57 years of age and religiously trained three times a week up until earlier this year. At 84 years of age, he became a Guinness Book of World Records holder for bench press in his age and weight group, lifting a total of 222 lbs. George was just shy of his 91st birthday, and he is the only 90-year-old we know that had everyone shocked by his death. He made aging and bouncing back from health scares look easy, almost as if he were invincible. He was an inspiration to all. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta, Georgia. A celebration of life reception, μακαρία (makaria), will follow immediately after the service concludes. Visitation and a Trisagion Service will be held the evening prior, on Thursday, September 25th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, Georgia. The family will attend a private graveside committal service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Roswell, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. Alternatively, floral tributes are gratefully welcomed and may be coordinated through Mayes Ward Dobbins. George’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his generosity, unwavering love for his family, and the joy he brought to every life he touched. May his memory be eternal.
