Colonel George (G. W.) W. Roberts of Powder Springs, GA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 in Austell, GA. A Funeral service will be held in his honor at the First Baptist Church of Powder Springs on Saturday, November 12th at 11:00 A.M. He will be interred at Powder Springs Memorial Gardens following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lottie Moon at www.imb.org . Colonel George (G. W.) W. Roberts passed away on November 8, 2022 at the age of 95. He was born in Paulding County, Georgia on August 2, 1927, the middle son of three sons and three daughters born to William Sim and Emma Cole Roberts. His parents moved to the Powder Springs area the year he was born. He grew up in a farm family and became acquainted with farm work and farm animals at an early age. He attended Powder Springs school and graduated in 1944 at the age of sixteen as the Valedictorian of a class of fifteen. In 1945, at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve Corp. Shortly after his 18th birthday, on 14 August 1945, he was ordered to active duty at Fort McPherson, GA and completed his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas. He was later transferred to Scott Field, Illinois, and was discharged from there in the grade of Corporal on 28 December 1946. He became employed by, and enlisted in, the Georgia National Guard in 1948. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1950 after having served in every Enlisted Grade but one. After several years of that employment and subsequent promotions he re-entered federal active duty in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel in July 1963, after having been appointed as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for the Georgia National Guard. In that capacity he was the Accountable Officer for all property and funds received and utilized by the Georgia Army and Air National Guard. He retired from that position in the grade of Colonel in 1983. At the time of his retirement he was the senior USPFO, in tenure, in the Nation. He held the retired rank of Brigadier General in the Georgia Army National Guard. He married Margene Westbrook of Marietta in 1949. They had two children, Janis Lynne and Michael Lynn Roberts, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He joined the Gresham Park Baptist Church in 1959. He and his wife taught Sunday School for several years and he served as Chairman of Deacons on three separate annual occasions. They relocated their home from DeKalb County to his old home place in Powder Springs in 1974. They joined the First Baptist Church of Powder Springs and taught Sunday School, primarily a young couples class, for several years. He served six annual terms a Chairman of Deacons. He and his wife continued to serve and support that church until their deaths. He is survived by his son; grandchildren Alan Cofer, JoAnna Cofer, Lindsay Roberts, and Nicole Miyata; great-grandchildren Evelyn and Arturo Miyata; brother Grady H. Roberts and sister Patricia Crabbe.
