James Bolan Glover IV

James Bolan Glover, IV, 94, of Marietta, died Monday December 23, 2024. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the Sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church in Marietta. The family will receive friends following the service. Bo will be laid to rest with his wife Joan at Mountain View Park Cemetery with private graveside rites. Bo was born in 1930 at Marietta, GA and remained in Marietta his entire life. He married Joan Wooten (daughter of Anne Lee Parker Wooten and Harry Dean Wooten) in 1950 at Coral Gables, FL. Bo was raised at his father’s Myrtle Hill and later raised his family in a home on McDonald Street, which his father built in1928. Bo was born and raised in Marietta attending Marietta City Schools. He was a 1947 graduate of Marietta High School where he excelled in academics and athletics. Bo also attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1951 where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, the Tech Varsity Letterman’s Club, Sigma Delta Psi National Athletic Fraternity, was vice president of Spike and Shoe Society, an officer in ROTC, Scabbard and Blade and a member of the Rambling Rat Club. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot, flying primarily North American F86 Sabre jets, where he remained for eight years before receiving his honorable discharge. Following his family's tradition, he went to work for Glover Machine Works in Marietta. Upon his father’s death in 1979, he became president of Glover Machine Works and sister company Cordele Steel Company in Cordele. In 1995, the property where Glover Machine Works was located since 1903 was purchased by the Cobb County Water Works and the businesses were merged with its sister company in Cordele. With this move, several museums became the recipients of old artifacts, patterns, locomotive parts and archival records such as the Atlanta History Museum, the Marietta Museum of History but more importantly, The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive in Kennesaw. Representatives from the Smithsonian Institute visited Glover Machine Works in the 1990s and declared that they had never before seen such archival records maintained by any industry as those records were saved from the inception in 1892. They agreed to partner with the local museum in Kennesaw and a replica of the former Glover Machine Works building was built to house the new facility. The Glover exhibits include the manufacturing process, i.e. pattern shop, foundry, actual Glover locomotives on display in various stages of manufacturing, and numerous photographs developed from the large plate glass collection of the old Glover Locomotives. Though a family business had ended, it is beautifully memorialized and preserved for posterity through these museums. After the company’s move to Cordele, Bo held on to the business with deep conviction the manufacturing must continue in the United States to maintain domestic economy, however foreign imports, domestic taxation and labor issues began to close steel manufacturing across the country. The business was sold to it’s plant superintendent in 2001 and eventually folded. Prior to this sale, Glover Machine Works held the distinction of being to oldest family owned and operated manufacturing business in Georgia. Bo was a member of the Marietta Rotary Club, served on the board of elders of Grace Community Church. He was an avid golfer and collected antique and classic cars. In his basement is a 1924 Lafayette Touring Car which was owned by his grandfather, John Wilder Glover. Bo was inducted into the Marietta City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame for breaking state records in track. Bo was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 74 years Joan Wooten Glover; parents, Prilla Garrett Rice Glover and James Bolan Glover, III; sister, Prilla Glover Ottley; brothers, John Wilder Glover and Charles Rice Glover. Survivors include, his son, James Bolan ‘Jim’ Glover, V; daughter, Anne Glover Cundiff (Tim); granddaughters, Aimee Dunwody Berry (Tyler), Lauren Heyward Russell (Matthew); great grandchildren Sawyer Oak Russell and Everleigh Heyward Russell; sister, Jane Glover Hawkins as well as other extended family and friends.
