James Alfred Mills

James A. Mills (“Jim”) of Marietta, GA, age 77, entered God’s nearer presence on Monday, April 15, 2019. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he was known for his passion for service. He was a long-time member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, where he most recently served as the chair of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. He and his wife Mary were also youth counsellors for almost twenty years; they were honored with the naming of the Mills Youth Center. He was also active in the Men’s Club and was one of the first sound technicians. James was a Little League coach at Custer Park for many years and served on the Board of Directors of the park. He also served the City of Marietta for over thirty-one years on the Board of Zoning Appeals, several times as the Chairman. He and his wife Mary were also Co-Presidents of the Marietta Junior High PTA and the Marietta High School Band Boosters. James and Mary held season tickets for Georgia Tech football and basketball games, attending regularly for many years. He was probably best known for his love of the Marietta Blue Devils, where he was a member of the Touchdown Club and most proud of his near-perfect attendance at home football games, missing only one game in fifty-eight years as a season ticket holder. He was also a charter member of the True Blue boosters. His four grandchildren were the light of his life, and he always enjoyed greeting them with a high five and attending their various functions such as swim meets, ball games, and recitals. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Susie Mills, his sister, Barbara Mills, and his brother George Mills, Jr. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Scott (Carla), grandchildren Brigham, Emma, Joseph, and Logan, and multiple nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 17, from 6-8 PM at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta. The funeral service will be at 2PM on Thursday, April 18, at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, 63 Maple Avenue, Marietta, GA.
