Jerry Silvers

Jerry Silvers died peacefully on March 18, 2009, after an extensive and brave battle with sarcoma cancer. Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary in Marietta with Rev. Dr. John Wells, Rev. Keith Gunter officiating. Jerry was born in LeRoy, Illinois, on March 12, 1933. After joining the Illinois National Guard, he served in Korea from 1952 – 1954. He was married to Barbara Sperbeck from 1956 to 1992. After receiving a mechanical engineering degree from TriState University, Jerry worked in the aeronautical engineering field for 42 years. On April 2, 1996, Jerry married Sherry Slaton White. Jerry’s life could be summed up in three words: service, humility and love. After retiring from Lockheed in 2000, Jerry became very active in First Presbyterian Church of Marietta. Jerry’s smile, embracing hugs and laughter brought joy to every life he touched. As a deacon, he served on the Mission Council where he traveled to several locations in Mexico and Mississippi. From the ages of 65 – 70 he was a youth leader to 7th and 8th graders. He served Wednesday night meals, assisted in the Alpha program, built Habitat houses, attended the men’s small group, and generally, was always willing to serve others with love and cheerfulness. He will be greatly missed by every life he touched. Survivors include his wife, Sherry Silvers of Marietta; two sons, Mark Silvers and wife, Jeanie, Michael Silvers and wife, Susan, all of Marietta; two stepsons, Hal White and wife, Becca of Birmingham, AL; Jeff White of Denver, CO; one brother, Wayne Silvers of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Carol Nealy of British Columbia, Beverly Granger of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Katie Silvers, Amelia Silvers, Barbarajean Silvers, Jane Silvers, Samuel White, Abigail White.
