Joanne Cheves Davis

Joanne Cheves Davis was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She left this world on March 10, 2024, at the age of 96, after a long and fulfilling life. Joanne was born on May 16, 1927 in Dothan, Alabama and was raised by her parents Judson and Lota Cheves. Joanne’s father was an educator, so she had a passion for learning from a young age. She graduated from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia. She attended and graduated from Vanderbilt University, where she excelled in academics and was heavily involved in her sorority, Tri Delta. She graduated from Vanderbilt and married Robert (Bob) Davis in 1949. Together Joanne and Bob had three children: Susan, Robert Jr., and Carolyn. Bob’s military career in the United States Air Force took their family all over the world – from Texas to Washington State to Savannah to Ecuador and eventually to Marietta, Georgia, where the family settled down permanently in 1969. Whether it was traveling around the country in their Airstream trailer with their beloved dog Amos or spending time at their mountain house in Sylva, North Carolina, Joanne and Bob loved a good adventure, and Joanne always made sure to send postcards to her children and grandchildren from wherever their travels took them. Joanne was an extremely gifted artist. She was especially skilled in the medium of watercolor, and her paintings have hung in galleries all over the Southeast. Much of her artwork represents the travels she took over her many years and her love of the mountains of Western North Carolina. She is also a published children’s book illustrator, painting the artwork for the book “Hopper and Amos: A Baby Bird’s First Adventure.” It is truly a blessing to see the world through Joanne’s eyes by way of her art. Joanne was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Whether it was watching her daughter play the flute, watching her son play basketball, or attending a sporting event or music recital for one of her many grandchildren or great-grandchildren, Joanne was always ready to support and show off her treasured family. Her love and support will truly be missed. Joanne is survived by her children: Susan Menard (Paul), Robert (Bob) Davis Jr., and Carolyn Silvius Torres (Tito); grandchildren: Richard Silvius, Jessica King (Ian), Tiffany Breitenbach (Donald), Christopher Menard (Shannon), Johannah Silvius Anderson (Greg), Melissa Davis, Laura Menard, and Caitlynn Silvius; great-grandchildren: Bella Silvius, Davis King, Owen King, and Lydia Menard; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Judson and Lota Cheves, her husband, Robert (Bob) Davis, her brother, Charles Cheves, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Davis. In honor of Joanne’s life, a memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church, Marietta, Georgia.
