Jon Wilson Gustafson

Jon Wilson Gustafson of Marietta died Thursday, December 4, 2014. Mr. Gustafson was born October 14, 1938 in Waterville, Maine to Maynard John and Eleanor Wilson Gustafson. He graduated from Waterville High School and joined the Navy. After the Navy, he attended St. Petersburg Junior College and then graduated from the University of Florida. Jon worked in Portland, ME for a year before moving back to Florida. He worked as an accountant for General Telephone in Tampa before moving to Marietta where he worked for a CPA firm that he later purchased. He was a self-employed CPA specializing in taxes. Jon was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was very active. He was a member of the Chancel Choir and the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class of which he was the long-time treasurer. He went on various mission trips to Mexico and to south Alabama after a hurricane in 1969. Over the years, he served on the Finance Committee, the Administrative Board, the Kindergarten Board, the Missions Committee and the Chapel Choir Board. Jon was active as assistant leader and on the troop board in the Boy Scouts. He took his wife and the two sons on various camping trips with a pop-up camper, traveling across this country and Canada. Later, he was an active square dancer, having danced since 1996. He and his wife attended several National Square Dance Conventions over the years. He also like to travel around the country with his wife in their motor home. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Mark Edward Gustafson and Laura Lea of Raleigh, NC, and Paul Alan Gustafson Jewell and Marie Kathleen of Louisville, KY; four grandsons, Luke Gustafson, Daniel Gustafson, Christopher Jewell and Michael Jewell; one brother, David Gustafson and Margaret of Ballground, GA; one sister, Mary Gustafson McConathy and Dr. Robin McConathy of Salida, CO; brother-in-law, Lewis Branch Sibley and Judy Sibley of Coatesville, PA; and nieces and nephews. Jon was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Harriet Sibley Gustafson and his parents, Maynard and Eleanor Gustafson. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Marietta with Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Interment will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
