June Stanley Shelton

June Shelton, 81, passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of September 10, 2024. She was surrounded by love and family. June was born on June 30, 1943 to Mary and Leonard Stanley and became the eldest of seven children. She was a lifelong resident of Marietta and graduated from Marietta High School in 1961. June was an avid supporter of MHS throughout her life, putting two children through MHS, supporting the MHS Marching Band, and the MHS Blue Devil football program, and would listen to the Blue Devils football games from her front porch when she could no longer attend in person. She also loved the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Braves, and the Atlanta Falcons. June was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disease that progressively stole her sight throughout her life. She never let blindness slow her down. While she could drive, she drove a Trans Am. She traveled across the country seeing everything she could see, and loving it all. As her sight diminished, she used technology to help her continue acting in the world as she always had. She enjoyed the moments when meeting someone new and she’d have to tell them she was blind because they were not able to tell. June began working at the age of 13 to help support her family at Atherton's Drugstore on the Marietta Square and eventually found her work home at Lockheed Martin in 1964 starting out in spares and then, as the Engineering Tech Contracts department secretary supporting a group of engineers who became like family over the course of her fifty years at Lockheed. June will best be remembered through her lasting friendships and the love she shared with her family. Her siblings and their families, her children, and grandchildren were all so special to her. Holidays and celebrations were large family gatherings with much love, which were made possible because she and her siblings remained close throughout their lives, knitting their families together in a heritage of loving relationships that has continued to this day. June is survived by her two children, Shannon and Stagg (Sheila), her granddaughter Maggie, her six siblings, Judy, Joan (Joe), Jean (Bob), Johnny (Sharon), Steve, and Kathy as well as her nieces and nephews, Scott, Kim (Andy), Donna (Matt), Robert, Melissa, Stephen, Nicholas, Laura (Ben), David and Pamela (Wes). She rejoins her parents Mary and Leonard, her granddaughter Katie, and many friends in heaven. There will be great rejoicing to see her again. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation on Sunday, September 15th, from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, which will be followed by a graveside service at Mountain View Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marietta High School Marching Band or Cobb County Humane Society.
