Karl Barbour

Karl Glenn Barbour, longtime resident of Marietta and Powder Springs, GA, passed away after a long illness, at his home on Thursday, November 13th, 2008, at the age of 89. Service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2008, at the First Baptist Church, Marietta, with Rev. Dr. Bill Ross, Honorable Adele Grubbs, Mr. Reid Brown, Rev. Mark Barbour and Don Barbour officiating. Interment will be in Marietta City Cemetery with Masonic gravesite rites. Born in Atlanta, GA, Mr. Barbour was a graduate of Boys High School and Georgia State University. A child of the Depression Era, he was enterprising as a young man selling pencils, collecting scrap metal, and entering boxing tournaments in order to help his mother keep their household together. After his service in World War II as a Navy Midshipman, he began his life-long association with the law by serving as an Atlanta Police Officer for 23 years before becoming a Probation Officer in the Adult Probation Division of Fulton County; after working 10 years as a Probation Officer he then earned his Law Degree, passing the bar in 1977, and practicing law for 30 years initially in Atlanta and then from his Law Office just off the Square in Marietta on Washington Street. Mr. Barbour was a well-known accordion player in his day and performed for WGST radio, WAGA radio/TV, and for many balls, dances and social gatherings. He was a member of Atlanta’s Gate City Masonic Lodge #2 F&AM, attaining the rank of Master Mason in 1972; he also was a member of the Scottish Rite Order of Freemasonry and of the Yaarab Shrine Temple of Atlanta and spent numerous hours supporting the benevolent work of the Shriners Hospitals for Children; a member of Marietta First Baptist Church, Mr. Barbour was preceded in death by his mother, Urie Bell Barbour of Marietta, son, Morris Karl Barbour of Jacksonville, FL; and brothers, William Hugh of Severn, Maryland, Fred Lindley of Round Hill, Virginia; he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Ann Stroud Barbour of Powder Springs; sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Mark & Dena Barbour of Stone Mountain, GA, Don & Jenny Barbour of Marietta, GA, Dale & Sandy Barbour of North Carolina; grandchildren, Donnie & Vickie Barbour, Lindsay Barbour, Matthew Barbour, Amanda Barbour, & Bethany Barbour; one great grandchild, Zoe, and numerous nieces and nephews. In his memory, contributions can be made to the Building Fund of Marietta First Baptist Church, 148 Church St., Marietta, GA 30060. The family will receive friends, 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home & Crematory, Marietta.
