Larry J. Roan

On a “Sunday morning coming down,” Larry Jack Roan, age 69, of Acworth, GA passed away peacefully in his home on August 9th, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on July 2nd, 1946 in Decatur, GA to Jack W. and Hazel Roan. He graduated from Southwest Dekalb High School, served as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, and later attended Greenleaf Business College. He worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight Trucking Company until his retirement after 28 years of employment. Larry loved Nascar racing, Alabama Crimson Tide football, his beloved, evil dog, Doobie, his good buddy, Ron Bacardi, oldies and country music, stirring his coffee way longer than necessary, holey t-shirts, and spontaneously bursting into song, which included but wasn’t limited to singing Christmas carols beginning as early as July, making up his own lyrics when he didn’t know the actual words, and particularly inserting himself into the song by way of speaking about himself in the 3rd person. He was a very charitable and loving man, always helping out family and friends however he could. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jean Baker Roan, and his children Kathy Roan, Starr Vicznesky and her husband Scott, Linda Blackmon, Jack D. Roan, and Julie Senger. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Roan and wife Betty, and his grandchildren Jamie Fort, Tara Crabtree, Laura Manderson, Joshua, Daniel, Christopher, Amber, Benjamin, Joseph, and Samantha Vicznesky, Lindsey and Trey Blackmon, Ty and Dalton Roan, and Makenzie and Ethan Senger, as well as 12 additional great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Ray Roan. The family will receive visitors at Mayes-Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, GA on Tuesday, August 11th beginning at 5pm. The funeral service, also at Mayes-Ward Dobbins Funeral Home will be held on Wednesday, August 12th, at 3:00 pm, followed by a military burial service at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery. Larry’s songs and stories will be passed down by all those who knew and loved him for many generations to come. However, this celebration of his life wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t end with a hearty “Roll Tide!”
