Laura A. Whorton, 83, of Marietta died Sunday, June 28, 2015. A Funeral Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 1st at the First United Methodist Church in Marietta with Dr. Sam Matthews and Rev. Elaine Wilder officiating. Family graveside service will be in Carroll Memory Gardens. Laura was born February 7, 1932 in Tecumseh, Alabama. She graduated from Spring Garden High School, Spring Garden, Alabama and attended Jacksonville State University and has been a lifetime cheerleader for the Gamecocks. She was a Carroll County and Carrollton City School kindergarten teacher, partner with June Brannen in BIC (Best In Cobb) Realty. Laura married (Joseph “Jay” Perry Whorton) on May 11, 1952. “Mom”, “Mimi” and Laura loved her family. Her greatest gift to us all was that she taught us to love the Lord, each other and cherish family time. She and Jay always planned for us to be together and made family gatherings a treasure. They were united, always together and a shining example of marriage to us and others. She loved music and shared her talent with her loved ones and especially her grandchildren and most recently her great grandson, Wright. Gospel music was her foundation and she sang and played piano her entire life. She loved flowers and making beautiful arrangements. Her home was a haven for all her family members and friends. She was known for her renowned southern cooking/baking which included her famous biscuits and gravy and caramel pound cake. She and Jay loved traveling the world with family and friends. She and Jay always spent the month of May going back to the churches where they grew up for decorations/reunions to honor their parents and family members who had gone before them. This was a huge celebration for them and for us to learn more about our family and appreciation for our past. She was a lifetime member of Arrington Chapel Congregational Methodist Church which her father founded. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marietta, the Jack Aaron Sunday School Class and Women’s Circle, Mountain Laurel Garden Club. Survivors include her sons, Michael (Mike) Arrington Whorton (Vicki), Timothy (Tim) Perry Whorton (Susan), Joseph (Rick) Patrick Whorton (Beth); grandchildren, Laurie Whorton Walters (Clint), Joseph Arrington Whorton (Catie), Michael Williamson Whorton; Robert Zachary Whorton, Savannah Jaye Whorton; Hannah Elizabeth James, Emily Lauren Whorton, Mary Katherine Whorton; great grandson, Clinton Wright Walters, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Joseph Perry Whorton (Jay); parents, Chester Burnett Arrington and Lena Matthews Arrington; siblings, Thomas Arrington, Clayton Arrington and Elizabeth Mitchell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of Marietta, 56 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, GA 30064.
