Lonnie Alfred Love

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lonnie Love, who left us on January 28, 2025, at the age of 87. A devoted husband, educator, and community member, Lonnie leaves behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity, service, and love. Lonnie was married to Cheryl Godsey Love for 55 years, and together they shared a life full of warmth, laughter, and mutual respect. As an educator for over a decade at Marietta High School, he challenged his students to think critically, encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. His career also included significant roles with the Georgia State Department of Education, the Governor’s Honor Program, and as the Coordinator of the Gifted Student Program, where he made a lasting impact on countless students’ lives. Outside the classroom, Lonnie had a creative side, designing beautiful furniture and home accessories for friends. He was an active volunteer, giving back to the community through the Meals on Wheels program, and his love for singing led him to perform with both the Presbyterian Church and the First United Methodist Church in Marietta. Known for his quick wit, sarcastic humor, infectious smile, and warm heart, Lonnie was a friend to all who knew him. He had a special bond with his lifelong friend, Cathy Colton and her children, Elizabeth and Emily-Wren, and Evans who were an integral part of his life. Lonnie is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Godsey Love; nephews Jonathan Acree and Philip Godsey (Amber); great-nephew Wesley Godsey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Vickey Godsey; and many friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and extended family. Lonnie earned his college degree at Presbyterian College and later attended Emory University, where he continued to grow as a scholar and mentor.
