Lorraine Ann Hanna Knowles Hutchins

Lorraine Ann, the last child of Mable Hanna, was born on December 17, 1957, and welcomed as “the baby” by her six older siblings. Upon Mable’s death eighteen months later, Lorraine and her sister Joan were eagerly adopted by neighbors Ruth and Leon Knowles, and thus began her road to being spoilt. From earliest times, Lorraine’s was a magnetic personality, constantly attracting people to her. As a child, she was a busy body, always getting into mischief and playing pranks. She was lovingly cared for by her parents and her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth “Mama Liz” Duncombe, and a wide network of extended family and friends who claimed her as their own, and all saw to it that she was raised in accordance with Bahamian traditions and values. Thus, St. Mary’s Church became her second home, and from an early age she learnt that service to God and His church was to be at the centre of one’s life. Lorraine’s was educated at St. Mary’s Day School, the Quarry Mission School, St. Anne’s Primary School and the Government High School, with a brief intervening stint at the Freeport High School. In 1974, Lorraine journeyed to London to complete her final year of high school. Upon return to Freeport, Lorraine was employed at Canadian Imperial Bank, then the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, and was later transferred to Nassau. She was employed by BITCO, and it was there that her love for Finance developed. She was motivated to pursue courses in Banking at the College of The Bahamas, and obtained an Associate Degree in Finance. Thus began her long and distinguished career in her chosen field. In 1992, Lorraine was joined in Holy Matrimony to Carlos Hutchins, and the union produced one son, Charles. He found himself blessed to have a loving and caring mother, whose innate common sense and practical approach to all things, prepared him well for the journey of life. Throughout her life and wherever she was, Lorraine’s spiritual journey was decorated with unrestricted service to her church. At Christ Church Cathedral, she was most active, with membership in the Anglican Church Women, the Altar Guild, and a Cell Group. Lorraine visited Charles and Carlos in Atlanta Georgia on a regular basis. While there, she became an active member at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Marietta, Georgia, where she formed many lasting friendships. In March of 2013, while spending Easter with Charles, a visit to the doctor revealed a diagnosis of breast cancer, and Lorraine remained in Georgia to receive medical treatment. On Saturday July 5, 2014, her heroic and valiant fight ended with victory as she was rescued from this earthly challenge and called home by her loving Heavenly Father. Lorraine will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was as smart and as intelligent as she was tall and beautiful. Her intellect, sharp wit and keen sense of humour endeared her to many, as did her forthright approach to all things. In her we found a trustworthy and competent friend, and great is our loss as we acknowledge her passing. May she rest in peace.
